20th IEEE International Requirement Engineering Conference (RE'12)

Requirements Engineering Conference Visualization (1983-2010)

20th IEEE International Requirement Engineering Conference
September 24th – September 28th, 2012. Chicago, USA

REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING: BRIDGING KNOWLEDGE GAPS

Technical and industrial paper abstracts due: February 27th, 2012; Full papers due: March 5th, 2012

Workshop proposals: January 30th, 2012. Tutorials, Panels, Doctoral symposium: May 28th, 2012

When Enrico Fermi withdrew the control rods from Chicago Pile-1 in December 1942, there was
some uncertainty about what would happen next. Just as with the first nuclear reactor, complex
system development often goes ahead with incomplete knowledge. Sometimes we cannot afford
to wait until we know everything we would like to know. Sometimes we need to build the system
to find it out.

The theme of RE’12 is how requirements engineers handle uncertainty; uncertainty about cus-
tomer priorities, run-time contexts likely to be encountered, how the requirements will change
over time, and so on. Computer systems are required to operate in increasingly complex busi-
ness, human, social and physical environments. Characterizing uncertainty and mitigating its ef-
fects are key challenges for modern requirements engineering.

RE’12 will be held at the Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago just steps from the Navy Pier and
the Magnificent Mile. Chicago: city of blues, starting point of Route 66, home to several world-
class Universities and headquarters of some of the world’s best-known businesses including Boe-
ing and Wrigley.

RESEARCH TRACK

RE’12 invites submissions in the following categories:

. Technical solution papers present solutions for requirements-related problems that are
novel or significantly improve on an existing solution.
. Scientific evaluation papers evaluate existing problem situations or validate/refute pro-
posed solutions by scientific means, i.e., by empirical studies, experiments, case studies,
simulations, formal analyses, mathematical proofs, etc.
. Vision papers explore the history, successes, and challenges of various requirements-related
practices and research agendas, and outline research roadmaps for the future.

Topics of interest related to requirements include elicitation, analysis, specification, validation,
modeling, verification, testing, and management. For a full list of topics considered in the RE con-
ference, please visit the RE’12 website.

If you have never previously published at a major international conference, then you may be eli-
gible for our mentoring program. Please check the RE’12 website for further details.

PRACTITIONER TRACK

RE'12 invites original submissions of in two categories:

. Problem statements present problems or challenges encountered in practice; problems and
challenges needing attention by researchers, practitioners, and tool vendors.
. Experience reports present successes or failures encountered in practice; experiences from
which researchers and practitioners can draw valuable lessons.

Contributions addressing all aspects of requirements engineering and business analysis in indus-
trial, governmental, or any practical context are welcome. For a full list of topics considered in
the RE conference, please visit the RE’12 website.
