Nicola Capuano, University of Salerno, Italy

SUPPORTED AND ORGANIZED by
The FP7-EU project ALICE (http://www.aliceproject.eu/).

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
Despite a great potential and some initial successes, e-learning systems do
not yet have the impact that many believe is possible. Moreover, the gap
seems to be increasing because of the greater expectations of the current
generation (Digital Natives) who have grown up with modern technology. There
are also more general problems. In particular, an over-emphasis on cost
effectiveness has meant that content is often not as strong as it needs to
be and this deficiency has contributed to a lack of user engagement and some
high attrition rates. Studies have consistently highlighted the important
relationship between engagement and learning, with students who are highly
motivated being more likely to engage in the learning process.
The international workshop ALICE 2011 aims at providing a forum for
innovative adaptive e-learning combining personalization, collaboration and
simulation aspects within an affective/emotional based approach able to
contribute to the overcoming of the quoted limitations of current e-learning
systems and content. Special emphasis is given to environments that are
interactive, challenging and context aware while enabling learners' demand
of empowerment, social identity, and authentic learning experience.
The expected contributions should be able to effectively involve learners in
educational, cultural and informative activities. Empirical results from
real users in real learning and training settings will be very valuable in
order to evaluate and discuss the impact of the proposed innovative
features. Academic researchers, professionals and practitioners are invited
to exchange their experiences and ideas about problems and solutions related
to the design, development and use of advanced and innovative learning
systems and applications. Researchers can report their ideas, models,
designs and experiences on the proposed topics.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
The main topics of interest within the scope of advances and innovative
e-Learning systems include, but are not limited to:
- Live and Virtualized Collaboration (CSCL Approaches)
- Affective and Emotional Approaches
- Simulation and Serious Games
- New Forms of e-Assessment
- Storytelling
- Adaptive Technologies

Ninth Workshop on Mining and Learning with Graphs (MLG 2011) @KDD 2011

Call for Participation

Ninth Workshop on Mining and Learning with Graphs 2011 (MLG-2011)

San Diego, CA, USA, August, 20-21, 2011
(co-located with KDD 2011)

*** Register before July 31st for discounted rates ***
This year's workshop on Mining and Learning with Graphs will be held in
conjunction with the 17th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery
and Data Mining that will take place in August 21-24, 2011, in San Deigo,
CA, USA.
There is a growing need and interest in analyzing data that is best
represented as a graph, such as the World Wide Web, social networks, social
media, biological networks, communication networks, and physical network
systems. Traditionally, methods for mining and learning with such graphs
has been studied independently in several research areas, including machine
learning, statistics, data mining, information retrieval, natural language
processing, computational biology, statistical physics, and sociology.
However, we note that contributions developed in one area can, and should,
impact work in the other areas and disciplines. One goal of this workshop is
to foster this type of interdisciplinary exchange, by encouraging
abstraction of the underlying problem (and solution) characteristics.
To reflect the broad scope of work on mining and learning with graphs,
we encouraged submissions that span the spectrum from theoretical analysis
of
methods, to algorithms and implementation, to applications and empirical
studies. In terms of application areas, the growth of user-generated
content on blogs, microblogs, discussion forums, product reviews, etc.,
has given rise to a host of new opportunities for graph mining in the
analysis of Social Media. Social Media Analytics is a fertile ground for
research at the intersection of mining graphs and text. As such, this
year we especially encouraged submissions on theory, methods, and
applications
focusing on the analysis of social media.

The MediaBase and the MediaBase Commander are supported by TELMAP (Future gazing Technology Enhanced Learning - The Roadmap for the unknown Learning Landscape - EU FP7 ICT SA).

This project focuses on ‘exploratory/Roadmapping activities for fundamentally new forms of learning’ to support take-up of those new forms, via ‘Awareness building and knowledge management on the results of EU RTD projects in TEL’ and ‘socio-economic evaluations in education and for SMEs’. We gather information on the current, desired and emerging position of TEL, and on awareness and appropriation (by educators and SMEs) of RTD results in TEL. We codify that information using state of the art knowledge management tools/ methods, at three levels of scale: 1) macro (political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental), 2) meso (organisation of education and training systems and institutions), and 3) micro (enacted paradigms of learning and teaching). Cutting across these levels of scale is the categorisation of changes as exogenous or endogenous relative to forms of learning and to the TEL community. This provides direct input to TEL-relevant decisions at all three levels, including economic, political, and research discussions. With a 10-year horizon, we co-develop a portfolio of stakeholder-specific roadmaps and influence maps, to gain insights into fundamentally new forms of Learning, Education and Training activities (LET) and into what makes for effective transfer and scalability. Our collaborative development approach leads to a Multi-perspective Dynamic Roadmap to track, anticipate and manage knowledge about new forms of LET and their impact on TEL. This extends established TEL Roadmapping methods in novel, powerful and cost-effective ways, with high potential for sustainability and for targeting each stakeholder’s goals. Outcomes include well-grounded recommendations on TEL and LET innovations, plus a platform and a sustainable dynamic process that will foster collaboration and consensus-building across specialized communities and stakeholder groups.

Special Issue on dataTEL "Datasets and Data Supported Learning in Technology-Enhanced Learning" International Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning (IJTEL)

CALL FOR JOURNAL PAPERS
Special Issue on dataTEL
"Datasets and Data Supported Learning in Technology-Enhanced Learning"
International Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning (IJTEL)
ISSN (Online): 1753-5263<tel:1753-5263> - ISSN (Print): 1753-5255<tel:1753-5255>
Deadline of submissions: 25 October 2011<x-apple-data-detectors://2>

SCOPE
The prospect of great growth of open and linked data in the knowledge society creates opportunities for new insights through advanced analysis methods based on e.g., information extraction, filtering, and retrieval technologies. Educational institutions also create and own large datasets on their students' and course activities. The analytic use of such data, however, is very limited, when considering new educational services, recommending suitable peers or content or processes or goals, and improving the personalization of learning. Nevertheless, personalized learning is expected to have the potential to create more effective learning experiences, and accelerate learners' time-to-competence. In the educational world, the literature is sparse on how to build upon today's very limited public datasets and how to accommodate the lack of agreed quality standards on the personalization of learning.
The special issue on dataTEL in IJTEL aims to address this issue by collecting high value research papers to develop a body of knowledge about data-based personalization of learning. So far, there is no consensus on algorithms that can be successfully applied to make reliable analyses of data in a specific learning setting. Having an initial collection of datasets, coupled with case studies of their use in TEL, could be a first major step towards a theory of personalisation within TEL that can be based on empirical experiments with verifiable and valid results.
However, data driven research confronts researchers with a new set of challenges, for instance, a lack of common dataset formats or policies to share educational datasets, a huge variety of different evaluation methods for comparing diverse personalization techniques, and new ethical and privacy issues that arise from the ability to link and mine information.
Therefore, the objective of this special issue is to explore suitable datasets for TEL – with a specific focus on recommender and information filtering systems that can take advantage of these datasets. In this context, new challenges emerge like unclear legal protection rights and privacy issues, suitable policies and formats to share data, required pre-processing procedures and rules to create sharable data sets, common evaluation criteria for recommender systems in TEL and how a data set driven future in TEL could look like.

TOPICS
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
- descriptions of datasets that can be used for experimentation
- descriptions of data experiments (methods or results of experiments)
- experiences with those datasets
- dealing with legal protection rights towards datasets on a European level
- privacy preservation for educational datasets
- methods of effective anonymisation of educational datasets
- management and pre-processing procedures for educational datasets
- future scenarios for educational datasets
- impact of educational datasets for learners, teachers, and parents
- mash-ups based on educational datasets
- recommender approaches that are based on educational data
- evaluation methodologies and metrics for educational recommender systems

Deadline Extension: Challenges in Evaluating Educative Experiences of Flexible and Personal Learning Environments (E3FPLE) in conjunction with ECTEL 2011

Deadline Extension

Challenges in Evaluating Educative Experiences of Flexible and Personal Learning Environments (E3FPLE)
in conjunction with ECTEL 2011 ((http://www.ec-tel.eu/)

Date: 21st September 2011

Place: Palermo, Italy

Extended Deadline for Paper Submission: 30th July 2011

GOALS & RESEARCH QUESTIONS

E3FPLE aims to offer an interdisciplinary arena to investigate the complexity that will characterize more and more the evaluation of future educative experiences (see lso workshop background). The major challenges are to identify and operationalize relevant qualities of such experiences, and to model and monitor their trajectories. The overarching goal is to inform the development of effective supports to enhance educative experiences of the stakeholders involved.
Accordingly the workshops intends to explore the following research
questions:

· Whether and how the existing evaluation methods from the field of Technology-enhanced Learning (TEL) and Human-computer Interaction (HCI) should be extended to address specific requirements of FPLEs?

· Whether and how compartmentalize the respective impact of software quality (i.e. interoperability), interaction quality (i.e. usability and user experience with individual widgets and their orchestration), information quality (i.e. contents delivered by widgets and their integration), and personal quality (i.e. individual goals, value and
expertise) on educative experiences?

· Which experiential qualities are relevant to successful educative processes in FPLEs? Are hedonic qualities such as identification, stimulation and evocation particularly relevant? Should the learner experience certain negative emotional responses (e.g. challenge, tension,
bewildered) or, in contrast, positive ones to achieve a stronger learning effect?

· How should the interplay between experiential evaluation feedback and redesign of the learning environments be enhanced? In which ways should the evaluation feedback be collected and presented (qualitative vs.
quantitative; level of granularity; monomodal vs. multimodal) to the design and development team to improve the uptake of evaluation results?

In the Workshop, these and other questions arising from the workshop submissions and discussions will be addressed. Submissions addressing the above listed and other related questions/ideas are invited.

3rd Workshop on Context-aware Recommender Systems (CARS 2011) at ACM Recommender Systems

                         2nd CALL FOR PAPERS
       3RD WORKSHOP ON CONTEXT-AWARE RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS (CARS-2011)
(In conjunction with the 5th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems)
               October 23, 2011 - Chicago, USA

                    http://www.cars-workshop.org

Update: The workshop organizers are planning a special issue on this topic in an ISI-rated journal.

This workshop builds upon the success of the previous two Workshops on Context-Aware Recommender Systems held in New York in October 2009, and Barcelona September 2010, which brought together an international group of researchers to explore the importance and use of contextual information in recommender systems as well as to discuss new research directions.

The importance of contextual information has been recognized by researchers and practitioners in many disciplines, including e-commerce personalization, information retrieval, ubiquitous and mobile computing, data mining, marketing, and management. While a substantial amount of research has already been performed in the area of recommender systems, the vast majority of existing approaches focuses on recommending the most relevant items to users and does not take into account any additional contextual information, such as time, location, weather, or the company of other people. Therefore, this workshop aims to bring together researchers with wide-ranging backgrounds to identify important research questions, to exchange ideas from different research disciplines, and, more generally, to facilitate
discussion and innovation in the area of   context-aware recommender systems
(CARS).   In particular, topics of interest for this workshop include (but
are not limited to):

-- Context modeling techniques for recommender systems;
-- Context-aware user modeling for recommender systems;
-- Data sets for context-dependent recommendations;
-- Algorithms for detecting the relevance of contextual data;
-- Algorithms for incorporating contextual information into recommendation process;
-- Algorithms for building explicit dependencies between contextual features and ratings;
-- Interacting with context-aware recommender systems;
-- Novel applications for context-aware recommender systems;
-- Mobile context-aware recommender systems;
-- Context-aware group recommendations;
-- Large-scale context-aware recommender systems;
-- Evaluation of context-aware recommender systems.

In case the main topic of the paper is a challenging dataset for context-aware recommender systems, the author(s) should describe the data model and the main features of this dataset, and make the dataset available for the research community.

PAPER SUBMISSION
The length of submissions is 5 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format.  Microsoft Word and LaTeX templates for papers in ACM SIG format are provided at:

All submissions must be in English and the files should be in PDF format.
Paper submissions and reviews will be handled electronically; each paper will be evaluated by the workshop program committee based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity.  All papers must be submitted through the CARS-2011 page on the EasyChair conference management site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cars2011).

ACCEPTED PAPERS
The accepted papers will be made available on the workshop website and on CEUR Workshop proceedings (to confirm). Authors will present their work in front of the workshop audience.
The workshop will NOT request the copyright transfer from the authors; therefore, after receiving feedback at the workshop, the authors will be able to submit the improved versions of their papers to conferences and journals (the workshop organizers are currently exploring the possibilities to organize a special issue on this topic in the UMUAI journal).

CALL FOR PAPERS

The International Conference on Management of Emergent Digital
EcoSystems (MEDES 2011)
In-Cooperation with ACM, ACM SIGAPP and IFIP WG 2.6
http://sigappfr.acm.org/MEDES/11/
November 21-24, 2011
San Francisco, California, USA

Description and Objectives
---------------------------
In the world of the Internet, the rapid growth and exponential use of
digital medias leads to the emergence of virtual environments namely digital
ecosystems composed of multiple and independent entities such as
individuals, organizations, services, software and applications sharing one
or several missions and focusing on the interactions and inter-relationships
among them. The digital ecosystem exhibits self-organizing environments,
thanks to the re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in
which resources provided by each entity are properly conserved, managed and
used. The underlying resources mainly comprehend data management, innovative
services, computational intelligence and self-organizing platforms. Due to
the multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems and their
characteristics, they are highly complex to study and design. This also
leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will empower
digital ecosystems to be innovative and value-creating. The application of
Information Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of
how entities request resources and ultimately interact to create benefits
and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge. These
technologies can be improved through novel techniques, models and
methodologies for fields such as data management, web technologies,
networking, security, human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence,
e-services and self-organizing systems to support the establishment of
digital ecosystems and manage their resources.
The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital
EcoSystems (MEDES) aims to develop and bring together a diverse community
from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring
the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital
Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be
evolved and adapted to this end. The conference seeks related original

Deadline extension: MSM 2011 (Modeling Social Media), co-located with IEEE SocialCom

Extended Deadline: July 22, 2011 due to multiple requests.

The call for papers and the submission details are below, or take a look at:
http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/ws/msm2011/

MSM 2011: Modeling Social Media, co-located with IEEE SocialCom

Objectives
Continuing the success of MSM 2010, we would like to address the user
interface aspects of modeling social media. Much, if not all,
interaction is done through some sort of user interface, however how to
model social media through the user interface has still not been
standardized. For example, people interact with their Facebook friends
through the Facebook interface or perhaps another SNS interface like
Seesmic. How do we model this user interface, and can this model be
replicated to other social media and other form factors like new
pad-based devices like the Apple iPad and to more recent high
graphics-oriented smartphones like the Apple iPhone 4?
The goal of this workshop is to continue our vibrant discussion on
modeling social media, focusing on the user interface modeling.
The workshop aims to attract and discuss various aspects of user
interface modeling in social media using a wide range of modeling
perspectives (such as justificative, explanative, descriptive,
formative, predictive, etc models) and approaches (statistical modeling,
conceptual modeling, temporal modeling, etc).
We want to bring together social networking researchers and user
interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds
interested in 1) exploring different perspectives and approaches to
modeling complex social media phenomena and systems through the user
interface, 2) the different purposes and applications that models of
social media can serve, and 3) issues of integrating and validating user
interfaces in social media systems.

Topics of Interest
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
* New modeling techniques and approaches for user interfaces in
social media
* Application design for user interfaces of social media (phone,
pad-based, PC, web)
* modeling social media users and their motivations and goals
* Modeling user behaviour in social media
* User-centered design for social media
* Models of user cooperation and collaboration in social media
* Trust and user-acceptance of social media
* Integrating user interface design with social media
* Testing user interface models and social media applications
* Usability in social media interfaces (is usability not much of a
concern since connectivity is more important?)
We also encourage submissions which relate research results from other
areas to the workshop topics.

EU IPTS Newsletter with report on our TELLNET project

Our project partner, the Institute of Prospective Technological Studies IPTS from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has released its July Newsletter with a short article about our TELLNET project.

How can social learning networks support teachers’
professional development?

The IS Unit is currently participating as a project partner in the "Teachers’ Lifelong Learning Network (TeLLNet)" project, which aims to understand how social learning networks can support teachers' competence building through visualisation, social network analysis (SNA), prospective scenario building exercises and a number of complimentary methods. The research focuses on identifying drivers and barriers for lifelong professional development of networked teachers, mechanisms for disseminating practices and innovations within and across networks, and implementing new peer-learning approaches within a Europe-wide networking platform for teachers. As part of this project, IPTS in collaboration with European Schoolnet recently conducted two workshops with teachers during the annual eTwinning Conference, which took place in
Budapest from 31 March to 2 April.

Currently, more than 86,000 teachers belong to the eTwinning network. For these workshops, six typologies of eTwinning personas were created and then explored with teachers (see presentations). A workshop took place at the IPTS premises on 6-7 June 2011 to explore what teacher collaboration networks will be like in 2025 with various experts from education, foresight and
information systems technology networks.

Host City: Aachen, Germany

Aachen is Germany's most westerly city and is situated directly on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. It was a royal residence of the emperor Charlemagne, and it served as the principal coronation site of Holy Roman emperors and of German kings from the Middle Ages to the Reformation. The Aachen Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978. The city has a flair and atmosphere of its own. The attractive layout of the old city center, the important historic monuments, the wells and baths over the hottest natural springs in Europe, the cultural diversity and quality and the many recreational and leisure activities make Aachen an exciting and pleasant place to visit and host a conference. Aachen is conveniently located in an extensive highway network with regard to transport facilities in the direction of Brussels, Paris and Antwerp. The international airports in Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Brussels, Eindhoven and Maastricht-Aachen (NL) together with the international railway network ensure a good connectivity. Every two hours, the high-speed train Thalys operates via Aachen between Paris and Cologne and ICE trains run from Frankfurt to Brussels via Aachen.

The AACHEN CONCURRENCY AND DEPENDABILITY WEEK is organized by the Software Modeling and Verification Group, Dept. of Computer Science, RWTH Aachen University and will take place in the Super C building in the centre of the town.
