9 PhD Scholarships in GIScience, Salzburg, Austria

9 Doctoral Positions in GIScience - Doctoral College, Salzburg, Austria

GIScience - Geographic Information Science
University of Salzburg, Austria
Doctoral College - DK-GIScience
Announcement of 9 Doctoral Positions

Geographic Information Science (GIScience) as an interdisciplinary field seeks to understand the nature of geographic phenomena and of geographic information. This doctoral college (DK for the German abbreviation used by the Austrian Science fund) advances formalized doctoral education and research training in GIScience at the University of Salzburg by integrating PhD students with focused research clusters. The DK seeks to conceptualize spatial principles and to explore scientific, educational, and policy-related uses of geographic information in order to analyze the complex relationships between individuals and society. It provides a framework for explicitly spatial scientific studies of physical and social phenomena. Three interconnected, interdisciplinary, research clusters have been defined. Representations and Data Models is focused on research into the conceptual modelling of space, spatial features and phenomena, and provides a spatial view of various categories of physical and abstract information objects in order to reveal the potential power of the 'spatial perspective'. Time and Process research will leverage the increasing availability of real-time sensor data, the importance of process-oriented modelling, and will address the need for temporal modelling beyond simple discrete time slices. Spatialization, Media and Society considers user perspectives and utilizes geospatial communication as a hypotheses generator for geospatial research: cognitive processes lead to mental maps which are highly relevant for actions, which in turn modify physical and societal spaces.
Concepts of spatial thinking and spatial theory are the lynchpin of this innovative cross-cutting field of research. The research clusters are logically linked, provide structure and direction for the research topics addressed, and define operational working groups for collaboration across PhD topics. Research clusters are critically important building blocks for workflows and information processing chains based on geospatially referenced information. Salzburg is an established hotspot for GIScience research and a well-known trademark in research and education, and combines University (Dept. of Geography and Geology) with non-university research (collaborating with the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Salzburg Research and research studio iSPACE). The Centre for Geoinformatics Salzburg (Z_GIS) is a flagship institution dedicated to research and postgraduate education. Since 1994, more than 750 students have graduated from the successful MSc program UNIGIS GIScience, the basis of a strong alumni culture.
Supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the program offers 9 scholarships for doctoral researchers at the Paris Lodron University Salzburg
The positions are in accordance with the regulations of the FWF (www.fwf.ac.at) and the gross salary is 26.278.- Euro per year, regardless of age and family situation. ACM Multimedia 2011, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2011.

ACM Multimedia 2011 Organization Committee invites active members of community to submit workshop proposals. The workshops should be "clearly focused" and facilitating active discussions and constructive
interactions on current or emerging topics of interest. They should allow members of the community to compare and discuss approaches, methods,and new concepts on research topics pertinent to the main conference. These topics often offer emerging interests to the multimedia research community or bridge the community with other areas.
ACM Multimedia 2011 will experiment a new workshop format such that the workshop will be co-located with ACM Multimedia main conference during the normal conference days (November 28-December 1, 2011). We hope that this new format will increase the appeal of the workshop, and significantly boost the workshop attendance.
Workshop proposals for ACM Multimedia 2011 should include:
* The title, goals of the workshop;
* The specific topics that will be addressed by the workshop;
* The relevance and significance of this workshop to the main conference;
* The history of the workshop if it is not the first version;
* The estimated paper submission volume and paper acceptance rate;
* Full day or half day workshop program;
* If there is journal special issue arrangement of the published workshop paper;
* A draft workshop call for papers with:
o The names, affiliations, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses
of the workshop organizers, who should be experts in the related topics  and preferably from multiple institutions;
o The paper selection process;
o A list of potential Program Committee members and their affiliations.
Workshop proposals should not exceed 3 pages and should be submitted to the Workshop Chairs, Borko Furht (bfurht@fau.edu),Jin Li (jinl@microsoft.com), and Maria Luisa Sapino (mlsapino@di.unito.it).
Workshop proposals will be evaluated based on various criteria including the quality and level of details of the proposal, the theme of the workshop, its relevance to the main conference, and the overall balance of the conference workshop program.

ACM Multimedia 2011 Workshops Policy
Organizing a workshop with ACM Multimedia 2011 makes a great contribution to the  community and takes great effort from the organizers and the program committee.  It is also a high visibility undertaking. In general, ACM Multimedia 2011 expects  full-day workshops. One key organizer must commit to attend and manage the workshop on site. It is recommended to have at most three co-chairs for a workshop. In the past, we have received workshop proposals with similar and/or highly related themes.  In such a case, the ACM Multimedia 2011 workshop chairs may encourage  the organizers of the related workshop to consider to merge the related workshop into a combined workshop. Although we encourage the workshop organizers to feature novel and high-quality events (for example, keynote speaker session, panel discussion session, roundtable discussion)  to promote their workshop quality and attendance, it is required for the organizers
to discuss with the ACM Multimedia 2011 workshop chairs in advance to get approval  for any special sessions other than paper presentation sessions. It is the duties of the workshop organizer to inform the ACM Multimedia 2011 workshop chairs as soon as possible, but no later than June. 30, 2011,  if it is desirable to hold the workshop on a particular date, (e.g., to accommodate  the conference schedule and travel need of the invited speakers).  The workshop chairs will check the availability of the facility to see if such request can be accommodated. It is required for the workshop organizers to submit an estimated paper submission
volume in their workshop proposals. For a workshop, if the received number of paper  submission is lower than 25 or the number of accepted paper is lower than 12,  the workshop may not have sufficient sessions for a full-day program. In such a case, the workshop may be converted into a half-day event. If the number of submitted paper for a workshop is at a significant lower level, the event may also be cancelled. All attendants of a workshop (organizers, invited speakers, authors, etc) need to register. The workshop should follow agreed submission deadlines specified by the ACM Multimedia 2011 Workshop Chairs. Workshop organizers should not change these deadlines without the explicit agreement from the workshop chairs. All invited and regular paper submissions must go through professional peer reviews.  Although no hard acceptance rate threshold specified, one would not normally expect more than 50% of papers to be accepted. In addition, any accepted paper should make a reasonable contribution to the field of study.

Collaborative Storytelling on the Web 2.0

Last Friday, I had the honor to be invited to give a presentation at the TERENCE workshop, L3S, Hannover, Germany. TERENCE is a EU FP7 project involving higher education organizations from eight European countries jointly working together in order to develop few adaptive learning systems (ALSs) for poor comprehenders, hearing and deaf children. The project has been launched on October 1st, 2010, having an implementation period of 36 months.
My presentation was about our experiences at RWTH Aachen University DBIS  with collaborative storytelling on the Web 2.0. From the discussion it became clear that there is still a big gap between the use of storytelling for adults and for children especially those with special needs. Anyway, at least me learned a lot and I enjoyed meeting a highly motivated bunch of people interested in a very relevant research topic.

ACM TIST: Special Issue on Semantic Adaptive Social Web

CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology
Special Issue on Semantic Adaptive Social Web

1. OVERVIEW
Social Web is growing daily, together with the number of users and applications.  Users generate a significant part of Web content and traffic: they create, connect,  comment, tag, rate, remix, upload/download, new or existing resources in an architecture of participation, where user contribution and interaction add value.
Users are also involved in a broad range of social activities like creating friendship relationships, recommending and sharing resources, suggesting friends, creating groups and communities, commenting friends activities and profiles and so on. At the same time, Semantic Web, whose main goal is to describe Web resources in a way that allows machines to understand and process them, has started to go out from academies and begins to be massively exploited in many web sites, incorporating high-quality user contributed content and semantic annotations using Internet-based services as an enabling  platform.

The recent advances in the Semantic Web area, and specifically the widespread use of weak semantic techniques (the so-called 'lowercase' semantic web), such as the use of microformats (e.g. eRDF, RDFa) to attach semantics to content, also provide new standardized ways to process and share information. This approach allows information intended for end-users (such as contact  information, geographic coordinates, calendar events, ...) to also be automatically processed by machines, and this obviates other more complicated methods of processing, such as natural language  processing or screen scraping.

The primary goal of this special issue is to showcase cutting edge research on the intersection of  Social Web and Semantic Web, in order to analyze the benefits adaptation and personalization have to offer in the Web of the future, the so-called Social Semantic Web. We are particularly interested in system-oriented papers, in which the approaches are accompanied by  an in-depth experimental evaluation.

R E Q U I R E M E N T S I N M O T I O N

In a world where change has become the only constant, requirements evolve continuously and inevitably. They do so for a variety of reasons: users become ever mode demanding, organizations mutate, business
opportunities come and go, new laws and regulations appear, technologies develop, and so on. As systems grow ever bigger and more complex, are developed globally and  become more interconnected, the impacts of changes are harder to analyze  and control. In these settings, ensuring that software will continue to exhibit its intended properties thus becomes trickier. More challenges are also imposed by new development paradigms (e.g. agile methods and software product lines) and the increasing demand for specific qualities
such as security and self-adaptation. Efficient management of change in the broad diversity of Requirements
Engineering (RE) contexts and across the whole RE process continuously  calls for novel research ideas. For this reason, the 19th IEEE  International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE'11) specifically encourages submissions that address requirements change and evolution. RE'11 will nevertheless remain true to its tradition and invites papers  that address all facets of RE, from elicitation to validation, from  formal to informal, from large to small, and across people-centric,  business-centric and system-centric viewpoints.

ISJ Special Issue on 'Interpreting Digital Enabled Social Networks'

Information Systems Journal special issue call for paper - Interpreting Digital Enabled Social Networks

Special Issue Guest Editors
Eoin Whelan, University of Limerick, Ireland
Brian Butler, University of Pittsburgh, USA
Robin Teigland, Stockholm School of Economics
Emmanuelle Vaast, Long Island University, USA

While the study of social networks enjoys a long and rich tradition, particularly in the fields of sociology and anthropology, it has only recently grown in popularity among IS researchers interested in applying established social network theories to online environments.  This recent interest from the IS community has been driven by a number of factors including the advances in the computing and visualisation power of social network analysis packages, the public availability of large-scale empirical datasets (such as the Enron email archive), and the emergence of the popular online social networking services Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter, as well as other platforms that facilitate mass collaboration and self-organisation, such as blogs, wikis, user tagging systems, and even the more recent emergence of virtual worlds.  As such, a number of prominent IS journals have already dedicated special issues to the topic of digital enabled social networks in recent times.  While the studies published in these special issues have generated many important insights, the majority have tended to investigate digital enabled social networks with a positivist philosophy employing quantitative methods.  Much of our current understanding of the dynamics of these social structures stems from methods which measure and correlate the overall network structure, or the individual’s position within the network, to a variety of dependent variables.  There is much that has yet to be understood about social networks constructed on digital platforms, particularly their impact on organisational life.  Interpretative studies can contribute greatly by providing rich and deep insights into the inner workings of these important organisational forms and the technical, behavioural, and economic challenges they face.

The aim of this special issue is to advance the state of social network research within the IS field by discussing and disseminating empirical results gained through interpretative studies.  The focus is upon highlighting work that makes significant theoretical and empirical advances to our understanding of digital enabled social networks.  Submissions that address methodological issues associated with the study of social networks in IS research are also welcome.

Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:
·    New qualitative approaches to study digital enabled social networks
·    Assessing the nature and quality of information exchange and knowledge creation in digital enabled social networks
·    IS case studies that describe how digital enabled social networks can be harnessed in organisational settings
·    Open innovation/co-creation through digital enabled social networks
·    Interpretative studies investigating entrepreneurship and the rise of occupational communities through digital enabled social networks
·    Interpretative insights of leadership and governance in digital enabled social networks
·    Qualitative approaches to examine the interplay between online and offline social networks
·    Social networks and IT adoption
·    Interpretative studies to ascertain the role of ICT in the diffusion of information, trends, behaviours, and innovations in social networks
·    Combining social network analysis and qualitative approaches in IS research
·    Methodological issues in IS social network research
·    Critical reviews of the digital enabled social network literature
