Postdoc position in Real-time peer-to-peer collaborative systems at INRIA Nancy-Grand Est, France

Postdoc position at INRIA Nancy-Grand Est, France
Real-time peer-to-peer collaborative systems

INRIA (http://www.inria.fr/), the French national institute for research in computer science and control, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and communication science and technology. Throughout its eight research centers, the Institute also plays a major role in technology transfer by fostering training through research, diffusion of scientific and technical information, development, as well as providing
expert advice and participating in international programs.
The proposed job is offered by INRIA Nancy-Grand Est research center for a position of postdoc in the SCORE research team (http://score.loria.fr).

Starting date of the job: as soon as possible
Employment period: 9 months (possibly extendable to 18 months)
Gross salary: around 2500 Euro depending on the experience of the candidate

Nowadays we are faced with an explosion of real-time and social software such as wikis, blog, micro-blogs, and social networks services (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.). Most of the platforms hosting these social services rely on a central authority and place personal information in the hands of a single large corporation which is a perceived privacy threat. Our vision is to move away from centralised authority-based collaboration towards a decentralized collaboration where each user can decide with whom to share their data. One important aspect is management of distributed shared data. In order to provide a high responsiveness, data availability, reliability, scalability and fault tolerance, data is replicated. Optimistic replication approaches are used to maintain consistency of the different copies of the same data. These approaches tolerate divergence between copies after they have been modified and ensure that they will eventually converge.
The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position will be involved in the design of optimistic replication mechanisms and/or the peer-to-peer architecture suitable for real-time distributed collaboration. The candidate will be involved as well in the theoretical and practical experimentation of the proposed systems. The postdoctoral position is proposed in the context of Wiki 3.0 (https://wiki30.xwikisas.com) and ANR STREAMS (http://streams.loria.fr/) projects.

Required qualifications:
- PhD in Computer Science or Information Technology
- Expertise in one or more of the domains: collaborative systems, distributed systems, peer-to-peer systems
- Good communication skills for working in a team
- French language is not required

Candidates should send their CVs at ignatcla@loria.fr (Claudia-Lavinia Ignat, INRIA Researcher) as soon as possible.

The Future of Computational Social Science (JITP 2011)

CALL FOR PAPERS
JITP 2011: The Future of Computational Social Science
May 16 & 17, 2011 at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA

The 3rd annual, two-day Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP) thematic conference will be in Seattle, Washington, coordinated by the Department of Political Science and the Center for American
Politics and Public Policy (CAPPP) at the University of Washington.

APPROACH
Computational social science is an emergent field and source of new theoretical and methodological innovation for social science more broadly. Multidisciplinary teams of social and computer scientists are
increasingly common in the lab and at workshops where cross-fertilization occurs in the areas of theory, data, methods, and tools. Peer-reviewed interdisciplinary work is becoming more common as the computational tools and techniques of computer science are being used by social scientists. Previously, large-scale computational processing was the purview of expensive, university-centric computing labs. Now, with the democratization of technology, universities and for-profit firms increasingly provide large amounts of inexpensive computing power to researchers and citizens alike. It is the potential of these new computational technologies and related Web-based platforms for research, politics, and governance that led to the creation of the Journal of Information Technology & Politics. Previous special issues on "Text Annotation for Political Science" 5(1), "Politics: Web 2.0" 6(3/4), "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States" 7(2/3), and "The Politics of Open Source" (in production) have focused the attention of researchers on the expansive new landscape of digital democracy as well as the architecture and tools that underpin it.
In their 2009 Science article, David Lazer and colleagues highlighted some of the future challenges for scholars working in this area.
"Computational social science could become the exclusive domain of private companies and government agencies. Alternatively, there might emerge a privileged set of academic researchers presiding over private
data from which they produce papers that cannot be critiqued or replicated. Neither scenario will serve the long-term public interest of accumulating, verifying, and disseminating knowledge." Luckily, the phenomenon of computational social science is distributed so widely and found in such variety that these scenarios are unlikely. The trends towards openness and data and tool sharing are notable breakthroughs in a sphere where proprietary approaches dominate. Data, method, and tool transparency are increasingly watchwords for
governments and researchers. With this background in mind, we invite a wide range of paper
submissions on the future of computational social science. Submissions may include, but are not limited to:
* Applications of information theory to social science research
* Methodologies and tools for studying users and information on social media services
* Projects featuring novel uses of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software
* Large-scale empirical analysis and modeling
* Web technologies and data mining
* Interdisciplinary methodologies in collaborative research
* Pedagogical issues in computational social science
* Computer simulations in political science education and training
* Concepts from social sciences enhanced by computation, such as social network analysis
* Innovation in socio-technical network and infrastructure analysis

PAPER SUBMISSIONS
Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a research paper, policy viewpoint, workbench note, or teaching innovation manuscript by January 15, 2011. Proposals for full panel presentations will also be
accepted. Please contact the conference manager to discuss panels. Papers accepted for publication will be invited to revise and resubmit their articles for publication in a special issue, or double issue, of JITP.
Authors should "establish membership" at the JITP website, http://www.jitp.net, to submit a paper. Follow the instructions for regular article submissions, being sure to indicate that the paper is for JITP2011 in the comments section. Papers will be put through an expedited, blind peer review process by the Program Committee, and authors will be notified about a decision by March 1, 2011. A small number of papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference. Other paper authors will be invited to present a poster during an evening reception.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
JITP 2011 is pleased to welcome Jaime Teevan as the 2011 Keynote Speaker. Jaime is a researcher in the Context, Learning, and User Experience for Search (CLUES) Group at Microsoft Research. Her work

Mapping Science Exhibit, 7th Iteration on "Science Maps as Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries" (2011)

Call for Maps for the 7th Iteration of the

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science Exhibit on
"Science Maps as Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries" (2011)

Background and Goals
The Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit was created to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: (1) physical exhibits enable the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for display at conferences and education centers and (2) the online counterpart (http://scimaps.org) provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with detailed explanations of how these maps work.
Places & Spaces is a 10-year effort. Each year, 10 new maps are added, which will result in 100 maps total in 2014. Each iteration of the exhibit attempts to learn from the best examples of visualization design. To accomplish this goal, each iteration compares and contrasts four existing maps with six new maps of science. Themes for the different iterations/years are:
  • 1st Iteration (2005): The Power of Maps
  • 2nd Iteration (2006): The Power of Reference Systems
  • 3rd Iteration (2007): The Power of Forecasts
  • 4th Iteration (2008): Science Maps for Economic Decision Makers
  • 5th Iteration (2009): Science Maps for Science Policy Makers
  • 6th Iteration (2010): Science Maps for Scholars
  • 7th Iteration (2011): Science Maps as Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries
  • 8th Iteration (2012): Science Maps for Kids
  • 9th Iteration (2013): Science Maps for Daily Science Forecasts
  • 10th Iteration (2014): Telling Lies With Science Maps
Places & Spaces was first shown at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in April 2005. Since then, the physical exhibit has been displayed at more than 175 venues in over 15 countries, including eleven in Europe, plus Japan, China, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. A schedule of all display locations can be found at http://scimaps.org/exhibitions.

Submission Details

The 7th iteration of the Mapping Science exhibit is devoted to science maps that serve as visual interfaces to digital libraries. These maps might communicate the
  • quality and coverage of data sets,
  • the structure (ontology, taxonomy, classification hierarchy) of data sets,
  • (semantic) linkages between data sets,
  • the evolution of a data set, or
  • access and usage patterns of data sets.
They are intended to support the navigation, management, and utilization of mankind’s scholarly knowledge and to make it more readily available to researchers, educators, industry, policy makers and/or the general public.
We invite maps that show a visual rendering of a dataset together with a legend, textual description, and acknowledgements as required to interpret the map. Science map dimensions can be abstract, geographical, or feature-based, but are typically richer than simple x, y plots. Scientific knowledge can be used to generate a reference system over which other data, e.g., funding opportunities or job openings, are overlaid or be projected onto another reference system, e.g., a map of the world, but must be prominently featured. See http://scimaps.org/all-maps-1-6.pdf for an overview of the 60 maps already featured in the exhibit.
Each initial entry must be submitted by Jan 30th, 2011 and needs to include:
  • Low resolution version of map
  • Title of work
  • Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address
  • Copyright holder (if different from authors)
  • Description of work: Scholarly needs addressed, data used, data analysis, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained (100-300 words)
  • References to publications in which the map appeared
  • Links to related projects/works
Entries should be submitted via email to the curators of the exhibit: Katy Börner (katy@indiana.edu) and the exhibit designer Michael J. Stamper (mstamper@indiana.edu) using the email subject header “Mapping Science Entry”.

Review Process

All submissions will be reviewed by the exhibit advisory board and invited scholars from academia, industry, and government. Submissions will be judged in terms of
  • Scientific value – quality of data collection, analysis and communication of results. Appropriate (innovative?) application of existing algorithms and/or development of new approaches.
  • Value for scholars – what major insight does the map provide and why does it matter?  Is the map easy to understand by scholars and the exhibit audience?

Final Submission

Authors of winning entries will be contacted at the end of February and invited to submit final entries by April 30th, 2011. Each final entry comprises:
  • Title of Work
  • Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address
  • 24 x 30 inch, 300 dpi, landscape version of map
  • Official map description (200 words)
  • Biographies and photos of all authors (100 words each)
  • Signed copyright and reproduction agreement
Map makers are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators when designing their final maps. The layout and production of the 6th iteration maps are expected to be ready for display by mid-June, 2011.

Special Issue of IDA Journal on Dynamic Networks and Knowledge Discovery

Call for Papers:

Intelligent Data Analysis - IOS Press
Special issue on
Dynamic Networks and Knowledge Discovery

Aim and Scope

Modeling and analyzing networks is a major emerging topic in different research areas, such as computational biology, social science, document retrieval, etc. By connecting objects, it is possible to obtain an intuitive and global view of the relationships between components of a complex system. Nowadays, the scientific communities have access to huge volumes of network-structured data, such as social networks, gene/protein/metabolic networks, sensor networks, peer-to-peer networks. Most often, these data are not only static, but they are collected at different time points. This dynamic view of the system allows the time component to play a key role in the comprehension of the evolutionary behavior of the network (evolution of the network structure and/or of flows within the system). Time can help to determine the real causal
relationships within, for instance, gene activations, link creation/deletion, information flow.
Handling such dynamic data is a major challenge for current research in machine learning and data mining, and has led to the development of recent innovative techniques that consider complex/multi-level time-evolving
networks,  graphs, heterogeneous information (nodes and links), and requires scalable algorithms that are able to manage huge and complex networks. This special issue is motivated by the interest of providing a meeting point for scientists involved in the intelligent analysis of large complex networks and more specifically in the dynamic aspects of such networks. It aims at attracting contributions from both aspects of dynamic networks
analysis: large real network analysis and modelling, and knowledge discovery within those networks. Application of such techniques in the Bioinformatics or Social Networks fields are most welcome in the special issue.
Following the success of the DyNak workshop (http://kdd.di.unito.it/DyNaK2010/) joint with ECML/PKDD 2010 in Barcelona, we invite DyNaK's authors to send extended versions of their workshop contribution. The special issue is however open to relevant contributions that were not presented at the DyNak workshop
(see submission process below).
