IUI 2011 Workshop on Semantic Models for Adaptive Interactive Systems (SEMAIS 2011)

2nd IUI Workshop on
Semantic Models for Adaptive Interactive Systems (SEMAIS 2011)
February 13, 2011, Palo Alto, CA, USA
Abstract submission deadline: November 19, 2010
http://www.semais.org
Proceedings will be published electronically (CEUR-WS)

WORKSHOP GOALS
Semantic technologies and, in particular, ontologies as formal, shareable representations of a domain of interest play an increasingly important role also for the design, development, and execution of user interfaces and more generally interactive systems. Semantic models can serve a number of different purposes in this context. They can be used as application or interface models in model-driven design, generation at design time as well as at runtime, and integration of user interfaces. Ontologies may enhance the visualization and interaction capabilities of user interfaces in various ways, e.g., by providing input assistance, intelligently clustering information, or adapting the user interface according to the user's context. Especially in the latter case, ontologies can be applied for representing the various kinds of context information for context-aware and adaptive systems. In particular, they have promised to provide a technique for representing external physical context factors such as location, time or technical parameters and ‚"internal" context such as user interest profiles or interaction context in a consistent, generalized manner. Owing to these properties, semantic models can also contribute to bridging gaps, e.g., between user models, context-aware interfaces and model-driven UI generation. There is, therefore, a considerable potential for using semantic models as a
basis for adaptive interactive systems. The range of potential adaptations is wide comprising, for example, context- and user-dependent recommendations, interactive assistance when performing application-specific
tasks, adaptation of the application functionality, or adaptive retrieval support. Furthermore, a variety of reasoning and machine learning techniques exist, that can be employed to achieve adaptive system behavior.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
Following up the succesfull 1st SEMAIS workshop at IUI 2010, the workshop will address, among others, the following research issues:
- Improve UI quality by using semantic models.
- Representing user models, systems and their behavior, domain knowledge and interaction context by means of semantic models.
- Cognitively or neurally founded reasoning techniques such as activation spreading for semantic user models.
- Context-aware interaction based on semantic models.
- Adaptation strategies and techniques based on semantic models for e.g. recommender systems, adaptive retrieval, collaboration support systems and others.
- Generating explanations or visualizations to increase user confidence and support traceability.
- Scalability and performance of semantic model-based interactive systems.
- Semantic model-driven UI development.
- Generation and evolution of semantic models for interactive systems.
- Suitability of highly formal vs. light-weight semantic representations.
- Consuming linked data in user interfaces.
- Bringing ontologies together with current UI modeling languages, such as UsiXML.
- Evaluation approaches for adaptive interaction.

SUBMISSIONS AND PARTICIPATION
Prospective participants should submit a 2-page position paper describing their interests and work in the topic of the workshop. First comments on (one or more of) the following topics we intend to discuss at the workshop are also welcome, but not mandatory (additional questions are also welcome):
- What are the major challenges (technical, organizational etc.) for developing or generating user interfaces based on semantic models?
- For which kinds of systems or applications are semantic models particularly useful?
- In which ways will semantic technologies affect user interfaces in the future?
- What kinds of context-adaptivity do you see as particularly promising?
- How can adaptive model driven user interfaces be evaluated?

We will select participants based on the abstract's quality and the diversity of their backgrounds, aiming at an interdisciplinary group. The selected presenters will be asked to provide an extended 5-page position
paper one month before the workshop. These position papers will be circulated in advance for participants to get an understanding of the mutual views and to provide a starting point for the discussion.
Accepted submissions will be published electronically via CEUR-WS. Please submit your contributions in PDF format to submissions@semais.org.

PhD Position: Auto-adaptability of APIs for corporate data management, Clermont-Ferrand, France

PhD Position: Auto-adaptability of APIs for corporate data management

What's your challenge?
- How can a user-friendly web application interact and connect with a huge amount of web services?
- ### API Platforms are the central elements. To be able to use an API, a software connector must be developed. Automating the generation of connectors is already possible. But automatically detecting any change occurring in an API is hardly possible, especially when the associated connector is to be updated simultaneously. When changes occur in the API of a service, it results in a new semantics for this service: the corresponding application does not run as before, or the generated outputs are different. The aim of this thesis is to propose automatic processing of classes of API changes. This is the so-called "API auto-adaptability" problem. ###

What's in it for you?
- Completing a PhD and upgrading your career to an international level, whether in a business or academic field
- Acquiring skills in leading web technologies: web services and APIs, semantic web, business process management
- Developing a cutting edge web-based application and making a big impact on a growing company
- Working for a well-funded, energetic, start-up located in France
- Working with world class engineers and doctors in a great working environment

What do you need for this position?
- Master's degree or equivalent degree in Computer Science or related field
- Solid command of algorithms, data structures and software design
- Developing and/or designing large web applications
- Knowledge of relational databases and SQL, preferably MySQL
- Experience with Object Oriented programming, preferably PHP 5
- Ability to write both scientific publications and blog posts

the following would be appreciated...
- Web services knowledge (REST, SOAP, XML, JSON)
- Semantic web knowledge (RDF, OWL)
- Experience with Linux environment (LAMP)
- Experience with GIT

The PhD thesis will take place at :

Mining Software Repositories (MSR 2011)

8th International Working Conference on Mining Software Repositories
21-22 May 2011, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (co-located with ICSE 2011)

OVERVIEW
Software repositories such as source control systems, archived communications between project personnel, and defect tracking systems are used to help manage the progress of software projects. Software practitioners and researchers are recognizing the benefits of mining this information to support the maintenance of software systems, improve software design/reuse, and empirically validate novel ideas and techniques. Research is now proceeding to uncover the ways in which mining these repositories can help to understand software development and software evolution, to support predictions about software development, and to exploit this knowledge concretely in planning future development. The goal of this two-day working conference is to advance the science and practice of software engineering via the analysis of data stored in software repositories. We solicit short papers (4 pages) and research papers (10 pages). Short papers should discuss controversial issues in the field, or describe interesting or thought provoking ideas that are not yet fully
developed. Accepted short papers will present their ideas in poster form during a poster session at the conference, and in a short lightning talk. Full research papers are expected to describe new research results, and have a higher degree of technical rigor than short papers. Accepted full papers will present their ideas in a
research talk at the conference. A selection of the best research papers will be invited for consideration in a special issue of the Springer journal Empirical Software Engineering. In the Mining Challenge, we invite researchers to demonstrate the usefulness of their mining tools on preselected software repositories
(Eclipse, Netbeans, Firefox, Chrome) and summarize their findings in a challenge report (4 pages). Accepted reports will be included in the proceedings as challenge papers. The winner of the MSR Challenge will
receive an award. Please see the MSR homepage for more information about requirements and rules.

TOPICS
Papers may address issues along the general themes, including but not limited to the following:
* Analysis of software ecosystems and mining of repositories across multiple projects
* Models for social and development processes that occur in large software projects
* Prediction of future software qualities via analysis of software repositories
* Models of software project evolution based on historical repository data
* Characterization, classification, and prediction of software defects based on analysis of software repositories
* Techniques to model reliability and defect occurrences
* Search-based software engineering, including search techniques to assist developers in finding suitable components and code fragments for reuse, and software search engines
* Analysis of change patterns and trends to assist in future development
* Visualization techniques and models of mined data
* Techniques and tools for capturing new forms of data for storage in software repositories, such as effort data, fine-grained changes, and refactoring
* Approaches, applications, and tools for software repository mining
* Characterization of bias in mining and guidelines to ensure quality results
* Privacy and ethics in mining software repositories
* Meta-models, exchange formats, and infrastructure tools to facilitate the sharing of extracted data and to encourage reuse and repeatability

Doctoral Researcher in EU FP7 Integrating Project on Policy and Security Configuration Management (POSECCO), Innsbruck, Austria

In collaboration with several partners from academia and industry, the Innsbruck Information Systems (IIS) group of the Innsbruck University School of Management currently embarks on a highly competitive EU FP7 integrating project. The IIS group is now looking for prospective PhD students interested in the areas of research that will be elaborated within the scope of the project and willing to get involved in a determined and well-networked information systems research group located in Innsbruck, Austria. The PhD positions will be embedded in the POSECCO project which just started in October 2010 and is scheduled for 36 months.

The POSECCO project proceeds on the assumption that today's shortcomings with regard to policy and security configuration management impact trustworthiness, compliance and profitability of Internet applications. Core activities are creating and maintaining consistent security policies and their correct and traceable enforcement by security configurations of all infrastructure elements. The project's vision is to establish and maintain a consistent, transparent, sustainable and traceable link between high-level, business-driven security and compliance requirements on the one side and low-level technical configuration settings of individual infrastructure elements on the other side. Such an end-to-end link shall be maintained in operating conditions, i.e., considering a constant evolution caused by new or changing security and compliance requirements as well as a continuously changing landscape. It is intended to maintain this end-to-end link by automated means where possible and to offer decision support where human interaction is inevitable.

The technical research work conducted within the scope of the POSECCO project is complemented by a business-focused work package that investigates organizational processes putting particular emphasis on the involved stakeholders, their information needs, usability aspects and cost/benefit issues. This work package is led by the IIS group. Among others, the IIS group will conduct an empirical study in close cooperation with other project partners with the purpose of better understanding the end-user requirements with respect to policy and security configuration management and develop and measure KPIs for the project evaluation as well as for the discussion of the economic viability of the project outcomes.

A suitable candidate:
·         has a Master's degree in information systems, business administration, computer science or a comparable field.
·         has the ambition to complete a high-quality PhD project within 3 years.
·         has a strong research mindset.
·         speaks and writes fluently in English.
·         likes to work in an international setting.

To find out more about the IIS group, please watch the short presentation video available on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1RNRNeLZHg) or visit the research group's website (http://www.uibk.ac.at/iwi/).

The IIS group offers temporary contracts for 3 years, preferably full-time. Recruitment is carried out in accordance to the laws and regulations applicable to the University of Innsbruck.

To apply, please e-mail a detailed CV along with a letter of application to daniel.bachlechner@uibk.ac.at.

(http://www.dline.info/jmpt/submission.php). The papers should not be longer than 20-25 pages, single column, double space, 11 or 12 pt font, including figures, tables and references. If the submitted papers are extensions of existing conference publications, the authors must submit a corresponding letter, specifying clearly what is new in the journal paper and how the submitted paper distinguishes itself from the published conference paper. We require in minimum 25% of new material in such a paper. Any submitted paper
must not be fully or partially be submitted to another Journal, Conference, or Workshop!
