“Cloud” is a common metaphor for an Internet accessible platform of shared hardware and software hidden from users for scalable service provision. The technical foundations of Cloud Computing include Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Virtualizations of hardware and software. Under Cloud Computing, IT-related capabilities are provided as services, accessible anywhere anytime without requiring detailed knowledge of the underlying technology. Thus, many mature technologies are used as components in Cloud Computing, but still there are many unresolved and open problems. In particular, how traditional information systems can be (re-)engineered and migrate to new cloud platforms is a key issue of its adoption. This leads to our workshop topic of “Cloud Information System Engineering” (CISE).

The creation, operation, and evolution of such research and practice raise concerns that range from high-level requirements and policy modeling through to the deployment of specific implementation technologies and paradigms, and involve a wide (and ever growing) range of methods, tools, and technologies. They also cover a broad spectrum of vertical domains, industry segments, and even government sectors.

This event intentionally seeks scientists, engineers, educators, industry people, policy makers, decision makers, and others who have insight, vision, and understanding of the big challenges in Cloud Information Systems Engineering. The best papers to be recommended for publication in special issues of international journals.

The workshop papers will be published as a separated post-conference volume by LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science). Just for your information, starting from this year, LNCS papers will be SCI indexed. You can find details in the following URL:

UMUAI Special Issue on Context-Adaptive Collaboration Support for Knowledge-intense Work

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on
Context-Adaptive Collaboration Support for Knowledge-intense Work

User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)

Knowledge work in modern organizations is to a large extent collaborative. Free riding, dominance, group think, hidden agendas, and especially ill-structured tasks that emerge in the course of the collaborative process are but a few phenomena in group work that make it a non straight-forward effort. Users participating in a collaborative project may find themselves in different physical environments or settings and may use a variety of different devices. Also, users are often involved in more than one project at a time, raising the need for frequent task or tool switches and for rapid cognitive adjustments to the subject at hand. For a successful collaboration, these challenges need to be addressed.

A promising approach to solving these challenges are collaboration support systems that can flexibly adapt themselves to the context of knowledge workers. Context can here be understood in the widest sense: it comprises external factors such as location, device used or time, but also factors derived from the user¹s interaction behavior such as interest profiles or tasks the user is engaged in. Considering both external (exogenous) and interaction-based (endogenous) factors creates an interesting intersection between conventional, sensor-based context-adaption and adaptation based on user models.

The proposed special issue aims at attracting use-oriented contributions that discuss models, methods, techniques and empirical studies related to collaborative context in this wide sense as well as to adaptation techniques for collaboration environments. Furthermore, we aim to discuss resulting implications regarding the technical design of interfaces as well as soft- and hardware architectures. Special attention is given to context modeling and implementation of the various application scenarios as well as to the issues related to manual (adaptability) or automatic (adaptivity) in-use-adjustment.

We would like to invite in particular researchers and practitioners to contributions dealing with the following questions:

- What practical experiences - positive as well as negative - have been made with regard to the usage of context-adaptive computing and collaboration in real organizational settings? What experiences have been made with adaptation mechanisms (automatic as well as interactive) of such systems in these settings?

- What are different forms of adaptations for groups? How can this design space be structured?

- How can relations between context descriptions/models, context sensors and context-based services be described in a way that they can be understood and used by end users? What framing conditions apply for interfaces that aim to achieve this?

- What are suitable models for context management? How can context concepts be represented and retrieved? How can privacy issues be dealt with?

- How can individual contexts dynamically aggregated into group context?

- How can context architectures be effectively designed for sustainable usages (context evolution, context adaptation, traceability for end-users)?

- What are appropriate architectures for context-adaptive collaboration support systems? How can such architectures be designed to support context evolution, context adaptation, and traceability for end-users?

HOW TO SUBMIT

Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI formatting guidelines and submission instructions available at:

http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html

Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special Issue on Context-Adaptive Collaboration Support for Knowledge-intense Work.

Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and short abstract (which can be altered for the actual submission) to assist in the formation of a panel of appropriate reviewers.

UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and substantiated research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of computer systems to their human users, and the role that a model of the system about the user plays in this context. Many articles in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe the results of several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space to authors (so long as what they write is important). Authors whose paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a short justification upon submission that explains why a briefer discussion of their research results would not be advisable.

IMPORTANT DATES

Notification of tentative intent to submit: as soon as possible Title and abstract submission deadline: February 28, 2011 Paper submission deadline: March 31, 2011

REVIEW PROCESS

Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be reviewed by three established researchers selected from a panel of reviewers formed for the special issue. Barring unforeseen problems, authors can expect to be notified regarding the review results within three months of submission.

12th International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2011) Workshops

Call for Workshop Proposals
12th International Conference on Mobile Data Management: MDM 2011 Workshops
6 June, 2011, Luleå, Sweden

The MDM series of conferences, since its debut in December 1999, has established itself as a prestigious forum for the exchange of innovative and significant research results in mobile data management. The term mobile in MDM has been used from the very beginning in a broad sense to encompass all aspects of mobility – aspects related to wireless, portable and tiny devices. The conference provides unique opportunities for researchers, engineers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore new ideas, techniques, and tools, and to exchange experiences. As we progress into the next decade of the conference, we are witnessing improvements in sensing, tracking, and in the continued miniaturization of computing devices. The new powerful smart phones, the abundance of large rich mobile data and the coming of age of the cloud computing paradigm is opening up new avenues for research and exploration that impact larger and larger communities of
humans. In this new era the problems of seamless execution over the new computing infrastructure that encompasses smart phones, mobile sensors and cell phones, of scalable data management, of access to services, of intelligent and autonomic management of architectures, systems, algorithms and security threats, are becoming of paramount importance.

Following the MDM tradition, MDM 2011 workshops will provide participants with opportunities to discuss and explore emerging areas of mobile data management with fellow students, researchers, and practitioners. The goals of the workshops are to establish a common understanding of a certain aspect, to share experiences,  foster research communities,  learn from each other, identify open problems and/or  explore directions for future research. Note that the workshops are expected to provide significant room for controversial and stimulating discussions. The organisation of the workshop should thus take care of planning the correct presentation format to enable such kind of lively interaction. Plans to address this point
should already be clear at the workshop proposal stage. Workshops are tentatively planned to be held prior to the conference, i.e., on June 6th. Publication of accepted workshop papers will be through IEEE
Computer Society. The page limits for accepted regular workshop papers are 6 pages, including all figures, tables, and references, and 3 pages for short papers.

Submission Instructions:
Workshop proposals should be no longer than 5 pages and must include:
1. The Workshop title and acronym.
2. A summary of no more than 250 words describing the theme(s) of the workshop.
3. A more detailed description of the workshop activities, specific goals and plan, and explanations of why the workshop is a good match with MDM 2011.
4. The names, addresses, and a short bio (up to 200 words) of the organizers (up to three).
5. The names of potential program committee members.
6. If applicable, a description of past versions of the workshop, including number of submitted and accepted papers, and number of attendees.
7. The expected number of participants and the means of soliciting participation.
8. A description of the publicity plan.
9. A tentative Call for Papers of the workshop, including the workshop website address.
Acceptance of workshop proposals will be determined by the MDM 2011 workshop co-chairs.

Workshop on Data Intensive Computing in the Clouds (DATACLOUD 2011)

*** Call for Papers ***
WORKSHOP ON DATA INTENSIVE COMPUTING IN THE CLOUDS (DATACLOUD 2011)
In conjunction with IPDPS 2011, May 16, Anchorage, Alaska

The First International Workshop on Data Intensive Computing in the Clouds (DataCloud2011) will be held in conjunction with the 25th IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Computing Symposium (IPDPS 2011), in Anchorage, Alaska.
Applications and experiments in all areas of science are becoming increasingly complex and more demanding in terms of their computational and data requirements. Some applications generate data volumes reaching hundreds of terabytes and even petabytes. As scientific applications become more data intensive, the management of data resources and dataflow between the storage and compute resources is becoming the main bottleneck. Analyzing, visualizing, and disseminating these large data sets has become a major challenge and data intensive computing is now considered as the "fourth paradigm" in scientific discovery after theoretical, experimental, and computational science.
DataCloud2011 will provide the scientific community a dedicated forum for discussing new research, development, and deployment efforts in running data-intensive computing workloads on Cloud Computing infrastructures. The DataCloud2011 workshop will focus on the use of cloud-based technologies to meet the new data intensive scientific challenges that are not well served by the current supercomputers, grids or compute-intensive clouds. We believe the workshop will be an excellent place to help the community define the current state, determine future goals, and present architectures and services for future clouds supporting data intensive computing.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Data-intensive cloud computing applications, characteristics, challenges
- Case studies of data intensive computing in the clouds
- Performance evaluation of data clouds, data grids, and data centers
- Energy-efficient data cloud design and management
- Data placement, scheduling, and interoperability in the clouds
- Accountability, QoS, and SLAs
- Data privacy and protection in a public cloud environment
- Distributed file systems for clouds
- Data streaming and parallelization
- New programming models for data-intensive cloud computing
- Scalability issues in clouds
- Social computing and massively social gaming
- 3D Internet and implications
- Future research challenges in data-intensive cloud computing
