Metadata and Cooperative Knowledge Management

This was a keynote paper from the 2002 CAiSE. The keynote was given by Matthias Jarke.   It gives a nice conceptual overview on what we did in the collaborative research center "Media and cultural communication". The message of the paper is in the title. Metadata management is essential for any kind of cooperative knowledge management since the use of digital media requires some kind of interchange data formats and common understanding on the meaning of data. It was planned that this paper should be the first one in my cumulative habilitation work. But, then I decided for an even more interdisciplinary paper on our work on the electronic transcription of the Babylonian Talmud.

RecSys'10 International Workshop on the Practical Use of Recommender Systems, Algorithms and Technologies - extended deadline

Final Call for Papers - paper submission deadline extended

International Workshop on the
Practical Use of Recommender Systems, Algorithms and Technologies (PRSAT
2010)
30 September 2010 | Barcelona, Spain

In conjunction with the
4th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2010)

Important dates* Paper submission: July 7, 2010 (extended)
* Notification of acceptance/rejection: July 26, 2010
* Camera-ready copies of accepted papers: August 16, 2010
* PRSAT 2010 Workshop: September 30, 2010

Motivation
User modeling, adaptation, and personalization techniques have hit the mainstream. The explosion of social network websites, on-line user-generated content platforms, and the tremendous growth in computational power of mobile devices are generating incredibly large amounts of user data, and an increasing desire of users to "personalize"(their desktop, e-mail, news site, phone). The potential value of personalization has become clear both as a  commodity for the benefit or enjoyment of end-users, and as an enabler of new or better services – a strategic opportunity to enhance and expand businesses. An exciting characteristic of recommender systems is that they draw the interest of industry and businesses while posing very interesting research and scientific challenges.
In spite of significant progress in the research community, and industry efforts to bring the benefits of new techniques to end-users, there are still important gaps that make personalization and adaptation difficult for users. Research activities still often focus on narrow problems, such as incremental accuracy improvements of current techniques, sometimes with ideal hypotheses, or tend to overspecialize on a few applicative problems (typically TV or movie recommenders – sometimes simply because of the availability of data). This restrains de facto the range of other applications where personalization technologies might be useful as well.
Thus, we may have reached a good point to take a step back to seek perspective in the research done in recommender systems. This workshop contrives for a new uptake on past experiences and lessons learned. We propose an analytic outlook on new research directions, or ones that still require substantial research, with a special focus on their practical adoption in working applications, and the barriers to be met in this path.
This workshop aims at bringing the gap between academic researchers and industry practitioners in the area of Recommender Systems. We are interested both in research work that faces real industry problems, and in industry cases that create research challenges.

Topics of interest
This workshop is an opportunity to bring together researchers and
practitioners to discuss, on one hand, the main lessons drawn from successes but also from failures of recommender systems, and on the other hand, identify and analyze the major research areas in recommendation and personalization technologies that should be addressed in the future for a practical, effective take-up of the needs of vendors, consumers, and technology providers. Thus, topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Limits of recommender systems
- main bottlenecks, research dead ends and myths in recommender systems
- missing technology pieces for wider adoption
- social (privacy, culture) issues
* Analytical view of personalization experiences
- case studies of recommender system implementations & deployments
- evaluation and user studies of recommender systems
- scalability in large recommender systems
- lessons learnt from your past experience
- obstacles to massive deployment of recommendation solutions in industrial environments
* Recommendation in broader systems
- place of recommender systems in complete systems
- killer application area
* Next needs in recommender systems
- new business models related to recommendation
- social and cultural impact of recommender systems
- new paradigms to provide recommendations
- new areas for recommendations
- users' expectations about future recommender systems
- beyond one-shot recommendations: recommendations of sequences, goal-oriented recommendations, …

Submissions
The format of the workshop will combine short paper presentations with open discussion sessions. Papers will be grouped by topics allowing us to organize an open discussion for every topic. Active participation will be expected and formal conference-style presentations will be minimal. We invite two kinds of submissions:
* Short papers / position papers reporting on lessons learnt, concrete problems, new promising areas. The maximum length is 4 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format.
* Long papers. The maximum length is 8 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format.
Submitted papers will be evaluated according to their originality, technical content, style, clarity, and relevance to the workshop. Each paper will be reviewed by at least 3 independent referees.Papers should be submitted in PDF format. All submissions will be done electronically via the PRSAT 2010 Web submission system:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=prsat2010 At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the  workshop. Information about registration will appear soon on the RecSys 2010 Web page: http://recsys.acm.org

Funded PhD Studentship in Real-Time Analytics for Large-Scale Online Communities

The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) at the National University of Ireland Galway is seeking applications for a funded PhD student position in Large-Scale Dynamic Network Analysis, Mining and Modelling. The successful candidate will join a research team in DERI at NUI Galway in a large EU-funded project focusing on Real-Time Analytics for Large-Scale Online Communities

The Research
************
Our research project focuses on developing scalable analytics of structure, behaviours and content in large on-line communities in order to predict risks and opportunities and thus make suitable suggestions for rapid action or intervention. Online communities represent valuable information ecosystems whose micro- and macro dynamics in terms of structure, information, behaviour are not well understood. Thus, they are vulnerable to risks and failure to capitalise on emergent opportunities. We are interested in developing techniques for measurement, management, analysis, protection and optimisation of the health and functionality of online communities. Existing approaches fail the challenges of scale and cannot cope with the imminent growth predicted for online communities. New techniques are required to cope with the scale of data management, the speed at which timely analysis and action is needed and the complexity of people’s online behaviour. A major objective of the!
project is to combine risk management, community analysis and community forecasting in large scale to benefit individual users and businesses. The project consortium consists of European academic and industrial partners.

DERI Galway
************
DERI Galway (www.deri.ie) is one of the largest Semantic Web and Web Science organisations in the world. DERI's mission is to enable networked knowledge, globally interlinking information from the Web and the physical world. DERI's role in the project consortium is to produce a suite of novel, highly scalable analytical methods and tools for on-line communities. This requires to extract reusable, interpretable analytics in real time from the streams of dynamically, socially produced data from on-line communities. The group focuses on 4 non-disjoint dimensions: Structural Analysis, Behavioural Analysis, Content/Social-Semantic analysis, and Cross-community Analysis. The work will be achieved in close cooperation with other units and projects in DERI, as well as with the other partners from the project consortium.

Areas of Interest

These include but are not limited to:
* Feature Selection and Merging to provide appropriate, tractable abstractions;
* Graph theoretic analysis of communities in order to measure and understand emergent structural, communication, and behavioural characteristics;
* Scalable methods for mining and matching behavioural motifs;
* Techniques for detecting and tracking qualitative measurements of topic dynamics;
* Uncovering and measuring how community structures and substructures influence each other;
* Designing real-time algorithms for stream mining and cluster-based computing;
The successful candidate should have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, maths, science or engineering, and have the pre-requisites for PhD studies at NUI Galway (www.nuigalway.ie), and must be fluent in English. The PhD studentship covers academic fees, a generous monthly stipend and a research travel allowance for a three year period, as well as the use of DERI's facilities for experimentation and research.

8th Intl. Workshop on Personalization and Recommendation on the Web and Beyond ABIS 2010: Extended Deadline 11 July

ABIS 2010 – 18th Intl. Workshop on Personalization and Recommendation on  the Web and Beyond

4-6 October 2010, Kassel, Germany

Extended deadline: 11 July (was 27 June)

For the last 18 years, the ABIS Workshop has been a highly interactive forum for discussing the state of the art in personalization and user modeling. Latest developments in industry and research are presented in plenary sessions, forums, and tutorials. Researchers, Ph.D students and Web professionals obtain and exchange novel ideas, expertise and feedback on ongoing research before submitting their work to major conferences such as CHI, UMAP, WWW and SIGIR. Personalization has become a core feature on the Web – and beyond:  Google provides personalized search results. Amazon recommends books and other products. Facebook suggests friends and groups. Personalized  features and recommendations include items that were appreciated by  similar users or the user's friends and are typically based on a user's profile data, the user's current location or items that the user  browsed, searched, tagged or bought earlier. Mash-ups and  cross-application linking of user profiles promise to provide even more relevant suggestions and services.
Personalization is great. But personalization can go awfully wrong, too. Systems may draw wrong conclusions about your search actions and constantly annoy you with personalized menus that do not work or recommendations for books that you couldn't care less for. And do you really want your friends and colleagues to know what products you searched for yesterday?
We invite you to submit full or short papers, position statements, Ph.D. research plans and demos, between 4 and 8 pages in length. Submission instructions and templates are available at the workshop website.
Topics include but are not limited to:

- Obtaining user data: logging tools, aggregation of data from social networks and other Web 2.0 services, location tracking
- Modeling the user data: collaborative filtering, cross-application issues, contextualization and disambiguation, use of ontologies and folksonomies
- Personalization and recommendation: applications in social networks, search, online stores, mobile computing, e-learning and mash-ups
- Evaluation and user studies: laboratory studies, empirical studies and analysis of existing corpora of usage data
- Emerging and important issues: future applications, new paradigms in human-computer interactions, privacy awareness

ABIS 2010 is an international workshop, organized by the German SIG on Adaptivity and User Modeling of the Gesellschaft für Informatik. ABIS takes place in connection with LWA2010, together with related workshops on information retrieval, machine learning and information management.

Rapid Knowledge Deployment in an Organizational-Memory-Based Workflow Environment

This is a paper from 2000 which was published and presented at the ECIS 2000 in Vienna. I can remember that Fons Wijnhoven introduced Eric Stein to me after my presentation. But I was too exhausted and did not recognize that the Eric standing in front of me was the same Eric I cited in my paper. I really put my foot in it.

This special track will take place during ICL 2010 in Hasselt, Belgium (15 - 17 September 2010) as a special program item.
The Special Track CAF 2010 provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of computer-based knowledge & skill assessment in learning settings and based on that feedback provision for students and teachers.
The International Conference on Interactive Computer aided Learning (ICL) is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to focus on the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in interactive computer aided learning.

Background
Our modern life at the beginning of the 21st century is strongly influenced by effects such as rapidly changing and developing information, technology-enhanced communication and information access, and new forms of production and services in a globalized world. This situation requires individuals to adapt their skills and competencies. Consequently, educational objectives and societal expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Modern learning settings must consider learning community aspects as well as learner-centered, knowledge-centered and assessment-centered aspects.
By focusing on the assessment, this concept can be further distinguished in (1) summative assessment, performed at the end of a set of learning activities, and (2) formative assessment, which is intended to give continuous feedback to students and teachers. The latter mentioned formative assessment gives information about the current state of knowledge and/or the degree of knowledge acquisition within learning activities.
Assessment is an important component of modern teaching and learning processes in face-to-face courses as well as in e-learning environments; it provides valuable feedback to teachers and students which allows the revision and adaptation of teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, assessment activities and results can also be utilized for building and strengthening metacognitive skills. However, continuous and frequent assessment in learning processes may cause excessive efforts and costs. Therefore, computer-assisted assessment systems (CaAS) and computer-based assessment systems (CbAS) have become of increasing interest over the years. Assessment systems may support parts or the entire chain of the assessment lifecycle. This lifecycle includes authoring and management of assessment items, compilation of specific tests, performance of assessments, and compilation and management results. Additionally, emerging interest in the sharing and re-use of assessment items or compiled assessment tests and the exchangeability of assessment outcomes has resulted in standardization efforts, such as the IMS Question & Test Interoperability Specification (IMS QTI).
The special track will bring together international researchers as well as practitioners from different organisations who will have plenty of time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing.
 We invite submissions that deal with issues including, but not limited to:
  • Aspects of formative and summative assessment
  • History and challenges of e-assessment
  • Computer-supported assessment rubric
  • Computer-based knowledge & skill assessment for individuals and groups
  • Computer-supported peer assessment for individuals and groups

Please format papers using the ACM SIGCHI two column layout available at http://www.sigchi.org/chipubform. Full papers must include a title, sufficient space for the author name(s) to appear on the paper, contact information and affiliations, abstract, keywords, body, and references. Papers submitted by the due date will undergo a double blind peer review process by an international panel and evaluated on the basis of their significance, innovation, academic rigour, and clarity of writing.
Accepted papers will be included in the published conference proceedings if at least one author of any accepted submission has registered and attends the conference. Papers are submitted via an online submission system that will be opened in September 2010. Please send any questions to Jesper Kjeldskov, Technical Program Chair: jesper AT cs.aau.dk

WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
Workshops are half day or full day sessions prior to the main conference program on 29 June 2011. Workshop proposals (max of 2 pages, using the ACM SIGCHI two column layout available at http://www.sigchi.org/chipubform) should be aimed at a community with a common interest. If you are working in an emerging area of Communities and Technologies, consider organising a workshop as an opportunity to advance the field and build momentum. C&T workshops might address basic or applied research and practice, new methodologies, emerging application areas, design innovations, management
and organisational issues, or education. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the C&T community a new, organised way of thinking about the topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research. Some workshops result in edited books or special issues of journals; you may consider including this goal in your workshop proposal. Please send proposals to Jaz Choi, Workshop Chair: h.choi AT qut.edu.au

DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
The Doctoral Consortium is scheduled prior to the main conference program on 29 June 2011. The Doctoral Consortium offers research students a special forum where they can present, discuss and progress their research plans with peers and established senior researchers. Research students wishing to attend the consortium should submit 4 pages, using the ACM SIGCHI two column layout available at http://www.sigchi.org/chipubform, addressing 4 headings: Aims and Background; Significance and Innovation; Methodology; Questions and Issues (that is, identify those areas you seek feedback on). Places at the consortium will be offered based on a review of the submitted proposals. Please send applications to Christine Satchell, Doctoral Consortium Chair: christine.satchell AT qut.edu.au

VOLUNTEERS
C&T actively encourages students to volunteer at the conference. Being a student volunteer is a great way to support the research community, meet other students in the field, and attend an international ACM conference. You will help the conference organisers with the running of the conference and support the setting-up of presentations and workshops. You will see the latest in C&T research and development, and have fun while learning about running the conference. In return, you will get free registration. To apply,
email us your contact details (email, phone, university), an abstract of your research project, a CV, and the reasons why you would like to be a student volunteer. Applications close on 30 April 2011.
Please send applications to Ronald Schroeter, Volunteers Chair: r.schroeter AT qut.edu.au
