Barcelona, Spain, 29-30 September 2010

Organised jointly by
- 4th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2010)
- 5th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2010)

*************************************************************

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Joseph Konstan, GroupLens Research, University of Minnesota (USA)

AIM & TOPICS

Technology enhanced learning (TEL) aims to design, develop and test socio-technical innovations that will support and enhance learning practices of both individuals and organisations. It is an application domain that generally addresses all types of technology research & development aiming to support of teaching and learning activities. Information retrieval is a pivotal activity in TEL, and the deployment of recommender systems has attracted increased interest during the past years.

Recommendation methods, techniques and systems open an interesting new approach to facilitate and support learning and teaching. There are plenty a resource available on the Web, both in terms of digital learning content and people resources (e.g. other learners, experts, tutors) that can be used to facilitate teaching and
learning tasks. The challenge is to develop, deploy and evaluate systems that provide learners and teachers with meaningful guidance in order to help identify suitable learning resources from a potentially overwhelming variety of choices.

The aim of the Workshop is to bring together researchers and developers that are working on topics related to the design, development and testing of recommender systems in educational settings as well as present the current status of research in this area and create cross-disciplinary liaisons between the RecSys and EC-TEL communities. Overall, it aims to outline the rich potential of TEL as an application area for recommender systems, as well as expose participants to the challenges of developing such systems in a TEL context.

Topics include but are not limited to:
* User tasks to be supported by recommender systems in TEL
* Focus of recommendation in TEL
* Requirements for the deployment of TEL recommender systems
* Publicly available data sets for TEL recommender systems
* Recommendation algorithms and systems for TEL
* Transfer of successful algorithms and systems from other application areas
* Evaluation criteria and methods for TEL recommender systems

IMPORTANT DATES

20 June 2010: Submissions
16 July 2010: Notifications
1 August 2010: Camera-ready of accepted papers
29-30 September 2010: RecSysTEL Workshop in Barcelona

DATATEL CHALLENGE

Published datasets in recommender systems, such as the MovieLens and EachMovie ones, are very often used in experimental testing of new recommendation algorithms. Very few datasets are publicly made available online for TEL applications. Thus, it is not possible yet for TEL recommender systems' researchers
to apply and benchmark their algorithms on existing, public datasets.

To this end, the dataTEL Theme Team of the European STELLAR Network of Excellence (http://www.teleurope.eu/pg/groups/9405/datatel/) is sponsoring the dataTEL Challenge: a call for TEL datasets that invites research groups to submit existing datasets from TEL applications that can be used as input for TEL recommender systems (e.g. ratings, tags,  bookmarks).

The winner of the dataTEL Challenge will receive a best TEL dataset award.

SMUC2010: 2nd International Workshop on Search and Mining User-generated Contents @ CIKM 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS

SMUC2010: 2nd International Workshop on Search and Mining User-generated Contents
Workshop at CIKM 2010 (http://www.yorku.ca/cikm10/)
October 30, 2010, Toronto, Canada

SMUC10 aims to become a forum for researchers from several Information and Knowledge Management areas like data/text mining, information retrieval, semantics, etc. that apply their work into the fields of Social Media and Opinion/Sentiment Analysis where the main goal is to process user generated contents.

User generated content provides an excellent scenario to apply the metaphor of mining any kind of information. In a social media context, users create a huge amount of data where we can look for valuable nuggets of knowledge by applying several search techniques (information retrieval) or mining techniques (data mining, text mining, web mining, opinion mining, etc.). In this kind of data we can find both structured information (ratings, tags, links, etc.) and unstructured information (text, audio, video, etc.), and we must learn to combine existing techniques in order to take advantage of this heterogeneity while extracting useful knowledge.

NEW SYMPOSIUM PROGRAM IS ONLINE
WHY
Good decisions in heritage conservation are based on timely, relevant and  accurate information about the conditions, materials and evolution of heritage buildings and landscapes. Therefore, documenting, recording and analysis of heritage places is an essential part of their conservation and  management.
The rapid rise in new digital technologies has revolutionized the practice of recording heritage places. Digital tools and media offer a myriad of new opportunities for collecting, analyzing and disseminating information about heritage sites. With these new opportunities, there are also conflicts, and  an intense effort to build digital media into the education of conservation professionals. Issues regarding the proper, innovative and research-focused uses of digital media in heritage conservation are an urgent topic in the  global heritage conservation field, and Penn, KU-Leuven and its partners have played a leading role in this area of cross-disciplinary research and practice. The SMARTdoc conference offers a unique opportunity for educators,
professionals, heritage institutions, and managers of heritage places to  share, exchange, and explore new approaches, best practices, and research results in the area of heritage informatics.

Mediabase Commander and PALADIN - Network Analysis of Beamtenherrschaft

The image presents the network of my blog "Beamtenherrschaft". Bigger red circles are blog entries and smaller blue circles are web pages. So, here the intra-linkage of the blog as well as the inter-linkage of the blog is visualized. I was surprised to see the densely connected giant component of my blog. I was expecting thousands of isolated blog entry circles but it seems that I had some intra-linkage of blog entries in the last couple of years.

Our PALADIN (PAttern LAnguage for DIsturbances in digital social Networks) is part of the new Mediabase Commander. Users can create their own Mediabases consisting of Web 2.0 media like blogs, wikis, feeds, etc. After our crawlers have done their job, analysis and visualization tasks on the media can performed automatically using PALADIN. It uses yFiles FLEX for visualizing the network structure in a web browser. Different layouts like organic, smart-organic and circle are available. Typical patterns like trolls, spammers etc. can be identified automatically. Also simple network measures like betweeness, connectiveness, biconnectiveness, and degree centrality can be calculated and visualized by changing circle colors and sizes. Every network can be exported as adjacency matrix. Dynamic views of the network can be utilized by using the time slider (stepwise by years or months).

The Mediabase Commander can be downloaded from http://www.prolearn-academy.org/mediabase.

The CRIWG Conference on Collaboration and Technology seeks scientific papers that inform the design, development, deployment, and use of collaboration technology (groupware) and the work practices they support. Founded in 1995, CRIWG has become a significant forum for researchers and professionals to
exchange ideas and experiences about problems and solutions related to collaboration technology.
Most challenges in the collaboration technology field require a multidisciplinary, multi-methodological approach. CRIWG seeks papers on groupware from a wide variety of academic perspectives and epistemologies, ranging from collaborative and exploratory research, to theory building and testing, applied research, design science, engineering, and innovative evaluation methods. Researchers can report their ideas, theories, models, designs and experimental results to CRIWG either by submitting full paper contributions, in case of mature works, and shorter papers reporting innovative work in progress. As in previous years, the authors of the best papers will be invited to submit extended versions to selected journals. PhD students are invited to present their research in the doctoral colloquium. The CRIWG conference is supported by the Collaboration Research International Working Group, www.criwg.org, an open community of researchers. Traditionally, CRIWG is organized in remote places alternating between the Americas and Europe, with a small number of presentations, fostering critical discussion, team building and collaboration. The location

Workshop on Recommender Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning (RecSysTEL)

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop on Recommender Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning (RecSysTEL)
Barcelona, Spain, 29-30 September 2010

Organised jointly by
- 4th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2010)
- 5th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2010)

http://adenu.ia.uned.es/workshops/recsystel2010/

The aim of the Workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners that are working on topics related to the design, development and testing of recommender systems in educational settings as well as present the current status of research in this area and create cross-disciplinary liaisons between the RecSys and EC-TEL communities.

DATATEL CHALLENGE

Published data sets in recommender systems, such as the MovieLens and EachMovie ones, are very often used in experimental testing of new recommendation algorithms. Very few data sets are publicly made available online for TEL applications. Thus, it is not possible yet for TEL recommender systems' researchers
to apply and benchmark their algorithms on existing, public data sets.

To this end, the DATATEL Theme Team of the European STELLAR Network of Excellence (http://www.stellarnet.eu) is sponsoring the DATATEL Challenge: a call for TEL Data Sets that invites
research groups to submit existing data sets from TEL applications that can be used as input for TEL recommender systems (e.g. ratings, tags, bookmarks).

The winner of the DATATEL Challenge will receive a best TEL Data Set award, as well as travel/subsistence support to attend the RecSysTEL Workshop.

Special track on 'Tools and resources for Lifelong Learning' (TORELL)@ICL2010

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
Special track on 'Tools and resources for Lifelong Learning' (TORELL)
Personal Environments, Widgets and Connectors to support lifelong
learning and open education
http://bit.ly/caNevJ
At the International Conference on Interactive Computer Aided Learning,
Hasselt, Belgium, 15 September - 17 September 2010
http://www.icl-conference.org/icl2010/

SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL TRACK
The special track 'Tools and resources for Lifelong Learning (TORELL) - Personal Environments, Widgets and Connectors to support learning and open education' takes place at the 'International Conference on Interactive Computer Aided Learning 2010 (ICL)' in Hasselt, Belgium. For the interdisciplinary workshop TORELL we ask for contributions on web services, connectors and other techniques that can be offered through widgets to support lifelong learning and open education. Internet users  increasingly take advantage of personal environments where they can integrate various web services such as YouTube, Delicious, or RSS feeds. Personal environments like iGoogle, Netvibes or Pageflakes act like a  container where users can add their most favorite Web2.0 services, rather than browsing to each of them separately. A personal environment presents the Web2.0 services in a condensed view so that the users do not have to browse to each of the services separately. Web services can easily be plugged into the personal environment by using a widget standard. A widget - also called gadget, badge, module, webjit, capsule, snippet, app, portlet, mini or flake - can have many shapes and sizes and runs on different platforms as web or desktop widgets. Especially, web widgets have a broad application area; they can be applied in social networking software like  Facebook and LinkedIn but also in Elgg, Content Management Systems like Drupal, and blogging software like Wordpress. Widgets often utilize technologies form areas like text mining, semantic web, ontologies, natural language processing, and other data mining techniques. They support the exchange of ideas, exploration and search of content, annotation or connection of learners and open educational resources (OER). They are  suitable to train specific competences, visualize domain knowledge, or combine information from different information providers in a single widget.

The goal of CEUR-WS.org is promoting information exchange within the academic community. Editor is my colleague Martin Jeusfeld from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands. The service is part of the activities under the umbrella of SunSITE Central Europe where it is my pleasure to be the editor-in-chief.

In the Web 2.0, a growing amount of multimedia content is being shared on Social Networks. Due to the dynamic and ubiquitous nature of this content (and associated descriptors), new interesting challenges for indexing, access, and search and retrieval have arisen. In addition, there is a growing concern on privacy protection, as a lot of personal data is being exchanged. Teenagers (and even younger kids), for example, require special protection applications; while adults are willing to have a higher control over the access to content. Furthermore, the integration of mobile technologies with the Web 2.0 applications is also an interesting area of research that needs to be addressed; not only in terms of content protection, but also considering the implementation of new and enriched context-aware applications. Finally, social multimedia is also expected to improve the performance of traditional multimedia information search and retrieval approaches by contributing to bridge the semantic gap. The integration of these aspects, however, is not trivial and has created a new interdisciplinary area of research. In any case, there is a common issue that needs to be addressed in all the previously identi ed social multimedia applications: the interoperability and extensibility of their applications. The meeting held in Barcelona in May 2010 was the 11th in a series of Multimedia Metadata Community workshops, this time paying special attention to annotations on content in Social Networks. The presented papers have been collected in this book.
