Call For Papers

VLDB Journal Special Issue on Data Management for Mobile Services

Aims and Scope
==============

Small, GPS-enabled and wireless networked mobile devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, or car navigation systems have become powerful, affordable, and wide-spread. Not only do these devices interact with the environment such as local services and facilities, searching for useful information, but they are also capable of collecting and transmitting position data. There is a need for addressing both aspects, of supporting online services by managing the locations of large sets of currently moving users, and of analyzing enormous volumes of captured trajectory data. The latter may in particular be useful for improving mobile services.

This special issue focuses on managing information about moving objects in space and time, both for online applications and for analysis of "historical" trajectory data. Although substantial research has been conducted, there is still a large number of open research problems in data
management for mobile services. The aims of this special issue are to bring out the state-of-the-art in this exciting area and to provide directions for future research.

Topics of Interest
The VLDB Journal solicits contributions to a Special Issue on Data Management for Mobile Services. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

- environment dependent trajectory modeling ("semantic trajectories")
- dealing with uncertainty in modeling and query processing
- modeling movement in three dimensions (including 3D city models)
- modeling constrained movement (networks, obstacles, indoors)
- formulating complex queries on trajectory data sets
- data mining on large sets of trajectories
- discovering movement patterns
- query optimization for moving objects databases
- integration of specialized query types into higher level languages and into query optimization
- organization of query processing between mobile devices and servers
- mobile ad-hoc networking applications
- continuous queries and stream processing on moving objects
- dealing with privacy issues in online applications and in trajectory analysis
- high update rates and main memory management of moving objects
- scalable, parallel and distributed management of large volumes of moving objects
- on-line maintenance of large sets of trajectories for currently moving objects
- improving the infrastructure for MOD research (e.g. providing real data sets, benchmarks, platforms for experimentation)
- scientific applications on trajectory data
- novel applications posing new challenges
- sharing trajectories in web applications and social networks

Whereas we welcome any submissions of high-quality, original research, we are particularly interested in submissions that demonstrate integration into a system context. Besides novel technical solutions, well-written survey articles are highly appreciated.

For experimental work, authors are encouraged to make available their software to enable readers to repeat experiments and to support future experimental comparisons with alternative approaches.

One possibility to demonstrate integration as well as support experimental repeatability is to make the software available as a Secondo plugin (see http://dna.fernuni-hagen.de/Secondo.html/start_content_plugins.html).

Workshop Mobile Collaboration Systems at COOP 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS
MOBILE COLLABORATION SYSTEMS:
Challenges for design, work practice, infrastructure, and business

Workshop at COOP 2010, Aix-en-Provence, France, 19-21 May

Mobile devices are expected to soon become the “primary computer” and tool for sharingand connecting with others. In our thriving world of mobile communication, technologicaladvances have brought a number of novel and improved ways of collaboration; in business, commerce, healthcare, education, and society in general. Collaboration can help to overcome the limitations of a single user, device, and network. However, creating mobile collaborative applications and systems requires careful consideration and design.

This workshop aims to bring together designers, practitioners and researchers who share an interest in the study and design of mobile collaborative systems.

Description of the themes of the workshop

Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to

 * Mobile collaboration technologies in industry and business, e.g. mobile commerce, health care, telecommunication, etc.
 * Business models of mobile collaboration, e.g. mobile advertising, paid mobile content, innovation from emerging markets, etc.
 * Collaborative and user-provided networks, WLAN communities
 * Architectures and application frameworks of mobile collaboration systems
 * Security, privacy, trust and protection of identity in mobile collaborative systems
 * Design patterns of mobile collaborative systems and collaborative processes
 * Mobile collaboration-based user-provided services
 * Visualization of collaborative structures and processes
 * Awareness and ubiquity in mobile collaborative systems
 * Social applications, e.g. collaborative games
 * Location-based mobile collaboration, e.g. pedestrian navigation, augmented reality applications, etc.
 * User interaction and input techniques of mobile collaboration systems
 * User tests and evaluation of mobile collaboration systems; experiences from living labs
 * Impact of next generation mobile networks on mobile collaboration

This full day workshop will be structured as follows: welcome and introduction of organizers, poster ‘madness’ where participants introduce themselves and briefly advertise their work, coffee break and poster session with mingling to encourage small group discussions; afterwards discussion and group work, wrap up. The main goal of the workshop is to share understandings and experiences as well as to foster communities of interest. Depending on composition of the groups and workshop members’ experiences, the conceptualization of a ‘handbook for the design of mobile collaborative systems’ could be an additional target of the workshop. Each of the workshop participants should prepare a poster (alternatively two slides) of the contribution. Posters are presented shortly, and then discussed with the other workshop participants. According to our experience, presentation of posters results in much more interactive and fruitful discussion than the presentation of slides.

The interaction of this workshop is mainly characterized by group work carried out in small teams. Metaplan, brainstorming and similar techniques are used as appropriate. Before beginning group work, each group sets a set of target goals to be achieved. After the work in separate groups, all results are presented, discussed and collected together, with the target to come to final decisions on further steps.

Workshop proceedings will be published online (e.g. public BSCW, IRSI - International Reports on Socio-Informatics, etc.) The number of participants for this full day workshop is limited to 12.

Important dates:
29 March, 2010: Deadline for paper submissions
16 April, 2010: Notification about acceptance/rejection of workshop contributions

Post-doctoral researcher working on Process Mining in ACSI FP7 project

The Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Technische UniversiteitEindhoven (TU/e) is looking for a

***** Postdoc working on Process Mining for the EU project on *****
***** Artifact-Centric Service Interoperation (ACSI) *****

The Artifact-Centric Service Interoperation (ACSI) project is a so-called STREP project in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the EU. The project involves IBM Israel, Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza, Libera Università di Bolzano, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Tartu Ulikool, Indra Software Labs, and Collibra.

Interoperation between electronic services is one of the most challenging and pressing issues in today's increasingly globalized and de-centralized economy. The ACSI project tackles this challenge with a unified research program based on two key notions: "interoperation hubs", that enable flexible, scalable support for service collaborations in an open network, and "dynamic artifacts", that provide an approach to modeling and deploying business processes that simplifies the management of "hand-offs" of data and process between different services and organizations.

Process mining plays an important role in this project. The objective is the development of techniques and tools for process mining of services and artifact-centric interoperation hubs, to support on-line compliance checking, auto-generation of adapters, and the discovery of artifact-centric models that underlie a service's behavior.

The AIS group is one of the leading groups in the exciting new field of process mining (www.processmining.org). Process mining techniques focus on process discovery (extracting process models from event logs), conformance checking (comparing normative models with the reality recorded in event logs), and extension (extending models based on event logs). The work resulted in the development of the ProM framework that is widely used in industry and serves as a platform for new process mining techniques used by research groups all over the globe. Moreover, many of the techniques developed in the context of ProM have been embedded in commercial tools.

The Postdoc will be working in the AIS group under the supervision of prof.dr. Wil van der Aalst. The Architecture of Information Systems group is doing research in the area of process modeling and analysis. The group is rated as one of the leading computer science groups in the Netherlands and TU/e often seen as the epicenter of BPM research. The group uses formal methods such as Petri nets to design, analyze, and implement dynamic systems. The group is well-versed in workflow management, process mining, and process verification. See www.workflowpatterns.com, www.workflowcourse.com, www.processmining.org, www.yawl-system.com, www.win.tue.nl/ais/, www.wvdaalst.com, and www.tue.nl for more information.

Requirements:

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
- a solid background in Computer Science and interested in systems for process support (demonstrated by a relevant PhD);
- knowledge of data mining and machine learning and/or process modeling and formal methods;
- candidates from non-Dutch or non-English speaking countries should be prepared to prove their English language skills;
- good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing;
- moreover, candidates are expected to realize research ideas in terms of software.

Note that we are looking for candidates that really want to make a difference and like to work on things that have a practical relevance. Therefore, we expect people to be able to develop software for ProM in such a way that it can be used in industrial settings.

Appointment and salary:

See http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/dpo/conditions_of_employment/formal_conditions_
of_employment/
for more information on working at TU/e, salary, etc.

Application:
Interested candidates are requested to send an application by e-mail to Ine van der Ligt (e-mail: wsinfsys@tue.nl) with the subject field "PhD Vacancy in ACSI project".

The application should consist of the following parts:
- motivational letter;
- a curriculum vitae;
- copies of diplomas;
- proof of English language skills (if applicable).

Applications should be received by April 1st. Moreover, candidates should relate their expertise to process mining research (cf. www.processmining.org) and indicate when they are available.

Call for Workshops

EC-TEL 2010

Fifth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning

Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice

[www.ectel2010.org]

28 September - 1 October, 2010, Barcelona, Spain

Description and scope

EC-TEL 2010 will bring together people researching, working on and working with technological developments, learning models, and implementations of new and innovative approaches to training and education. The conference will explore how the synergy of multiple disciplines, such as Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Social Science, can provide new, more effective and more sustainable technology-enhanced learning solutions to learning problems. The conference welcomes researchers and developers from all countries and all industries to present their recent advancements from technologies, applications, and learning models in all areas of technology enhanced learning.

In addition to the main program, EC-TEL 2010 will host workshops on topics related to the conference theme. Workshops promote scientific exchange amongst junior and senior researchers from different settings (i.e. universities, high-school, lifelong learning institutions, foundations, SMEs, companies, technology platforms). The workshops provide a face-to-face meeting point for exchange of information and experiences (i.e. project results, ongoing research, outstanding topics) related to Technology Enhanced Learning and the many sub-topics which embrace it.

General Information and Criteria

· Co-located workshops should cover topics falling within the general scope of the EC-TEL conference (refer to http://www.ectel2010.org), in September 28th, 29th

· Face-to-face contributions are encouraged. A workshop is not intended to be a paper session, symposium or set of slideshows. The more that people contribute in a pro-active and inter-active way, the more chances to get a highly successful workshop. Organizers should explicitly indicate in the methodology section how to support this interaction and active contribution between participants

· You might consider online contribution from people abroad. Should you have this setting in mind, please indicate technical requirements and you will elicit contribution from this group

· The minimum number of participants, including organizers is 10

· There is a clear main focus-topic, in addition to a well-defined target group

· Workshop duration can be either a half day or a full day

· Furthermore, as organiser, please provide detailed information about the review process, the name and affiliation of the reviewers, and the kinds of submissions you expect from participants (i.e. abstracts, short papers, full papers). In addition, suggestions and contacts of scientific journals to publish the workshops proceedings are welcome. Participation without a submitted paper is also possible

· In order to ensure the quality of the workshop contributions and their alignment with the general conference, we will follow a two-step process: 1) When an individual workshop is approved, the workshop organizers will manage the submission and internal review process of its participants and submitted papers; 2) All accepted papers in a workshop should be submitted to the workshop chair before the workshop so that they can be accessible on the website

· The most relevant papers will be invited to submit an extended version for further publication in a scientific journal

Submission process

1. Write a 2-page proposal with the following sections: Title, link (if appropriate), duration (half day, full day), main person responsible (full name, email address, phone number, a 2-line CV), other organizers (full names, email addresses, phone numbers, a 2-line CV), reviewers (full names and affiliation), workshop description, main topic, expected number of participants, target group (i.e., participant profile), expected outcomes, methodology, timetable, technical requirements, other considerations (e.g. related to a project or association)

2. Make a PDF-DOC file. Only PDF or DOC files will be accepted

3. Go to the EC-TEL 2010 website -> Submissions -> Workshop Submissions: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ectel2010workshops

· Watch: there is a separate submission website for papers, posters and demonstrations at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ectel2010

4. Register at the EasyChair System.

5. Login with your EasyChair username and password

6. Choose "New Submission" in the top menu

7. Fill out all details in the form

8. Please specify all the required fields

9. Upload your workshop proposal as a PDF or DOC file; you can add an attachment too

10. Register into the conference

Important dates

1. Workshop proposals: 11 April 2010

2. Workshop acceptance: 11 May 2010

3. Paper deadline submission to workshops: 27 June 2010

AIMS AND SCOPE

The PAKM Conference Series offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners and researchers. The conference focus is on developing and deploying advanced business solutions for the management of knowledge in organizations and other communities that can benefit from its methods. This year's conference we will pay particular attention to the innovations on the interaction between Business, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Library and Information Science. PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange novel ideas, to develop new insights, and to envision, propose and demonstrate new kinds of solutions and new organizational methods and/or tools to Knowledge Management problems. Management in companies deals with many things: people, energy, materials, etc. The management integrates them as a whole system and organizes the flow between the parts efficiently. In some companies, the same is done with knowledge. What methods are available and how well this integration of knowledge is understood? Libraries and universities are examples of organizations where knowledge plays a major role within management. What methods are available to integrate knowledge (e.g., curricula, expertise, centers of excellence, programs) with people and other resources in libraries and universities? The topics will cover relevant and applicable aspects of knowledge management. We invite practitioners and researchers from all over the world to submit papers. We are looking forward to a conference which will address a wide spectrum of topics from a variety of perspectives. We seek original contributions in the business and organization sciences, cognitive science, library and information science, information systems and computer science that represent a true advancement beyond the state-of-the-art of Knowledge Management. Business and organization sciences provide the overall framework for developing a knowledge management approach with a focus on the business aspects rather than on information technology aspects. Computer science provides the tools needed to build the information systems that are often required to make certain aspects of a knowledge management solution work. Cognitive science helps to design knowledge management solutions in line with the cognitive capabilities of the people involved and optimally embedded in their work context.

Library and information science analyzes how to organize and understand knowledge for the benefit of the users.

IMPORTANT DATES

SUBMISSIONS

We wish to encourage the submission of contributions that espouse an interdisciplinary approach, which will therefore be favored over one-dimensional papers. Apart from a clear description of the real-world problems they address, papers must point out the business and/or the scientific benefits of the suggested solutions for a knowledge management task of an organization or community. Furthermore, papers should emphasize the novel aspects of the suggested approach. Submissions will be anonymous and subject to blind reviews.
