PAKDD Behavior Informatics Workshop (BI 2010)

Call For Papers

The International Workshop on Behavior Informatics (BI2010)
June 20, 2010 Hyderabad, India
http://bi2010.behaviorinformatics.org/

Held in conjunction with
The 14th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
(PAKDD2010)
http://www.iiit.ac.in/pakdd2010/

Important dates:
* Electronic submission of full papers: February 20, 2010
* Notification of paper acceptance: March 20, 2010
* Camera-ready copies of accepted papers: March 30, 2010
* BI2010 workshop date: June 20, 2010

Objective: BI2010 provides a premier forum for sharing research and engineering results, as well as potential challenges and prospects encountered in Behavior Informatics, namely towards deep and quantitative representation, modeling, analysis, mining, presentation, management and applications of behavioral data, composed of behaviors, behavior subjects and objects, behavior networks, organizational behavior, social behavior, system behavior, group behavior, behavior evolution, causes and effects, and/or behavior impacts.

Scope: The BI2010 workshop welcomes theoretical work and applied disseminations aiming to:
* Behavior modeling and representation: formalizing behaviors, relationships, impact and networks.
* Behavior analysis and mining: behaviors associated with high impacts are of particular importance, while impact-oriented behaviors are often sparse, rare and imbalanced isolated in business and data; analyse impact-oriented behavior patterns involves different pattern types and computational challenges.
* Analysis of behavior social networks: handling challenging issues such as convergence and divergence of behaviors, and the evolution and emergence of hidden groups and communities.
* Extracting discriminative behavior patterns from high-dimensional, high-frequency,
high-density, and huge amount of data.
* Large intra-class variance between behaviors: Due to the highly overlapped nature of behavior data, it is extremely difficult to build a robust behavior model which is tolerant for one behavior category while differentiate amongst other categories.

Social Networks Analysis and Mining: foundations and applications by Springer

Call for Book Chapters--Social Networks Analysis and Mining: foundations and applications by Springer Verlag

The study of social networks originated in social and business communities. In recent years, social network research has advanced significantly; the development of sophisticated techniques for Social Network Analysis and Mining (SNAM) has been highly influenced by the online social Web sites, email logs, phone logs and instant messaging systems, which are widely analyzed using graph theory and machine learning techniques. People perceive the Web increasingly as a social medium that fosters interaction among people, sharing of experiences and knowledge, group activities, community formation and evolution. This has led to a rising prominence of SNAM in academia, politics, homeland security and business. This follows the pattern of known entities of our society that have evolved into networks in which actors are increasingly dependent on their structural embedding.

IEEE DULP@ICALT 2010 - Design Centered and Personalized Learning in Liquid and Ubiquitous Learning Places

DULP@ICALT2010

Workshop on
Design Centered and Personalized Learning in Liquid and Ubiquitous
Learning Places: Future Visions and Practical Implementations

in cojunction with
ICALT 2010, the 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning
Technologies
July 5-7, 2010, Sousse, Tunisia

Workshop website:
http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/iede_mk/events/dulp2010/index.php
Main conference website: http://www.ask4research.info/icalt/2010/index.php

Workshop objectives
-------------------
The DULP vision aims at combining Design inspired learning, Ubiquitous learning, Liquid learning places (& liquid society), and Person in place centred design, which shall lead to challenging technologies, rethinking pedagogies, and being design inspired. This workshop deals with future
visions of the concepts of DULP, their interrelations and interconnectiveness to each other, and their practical implementation in and for Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL).

DULP@ICALT2010 intends to offer an interdisciplinary arena where everybody can present and discuss ideas on what could be the future of TEL in the next few years under the consideration of the DULP concepts; a future that has to be possible and that, thus, should be closely related to the present researches and educational processes.

The DULP@ICALT2010 should be of interest, not only for the ICALT participants, but for all those who do not want to stop at the "simple" development and use of technologies but consider them as the basics for supporting innovative educational visions aimed at improving the experience of the training process. For this it is expected that the workshop would be of interest to all those that look at the TEL with a strong interdisciplinary attitude, the same one that inspire the DULP vision: technologists; educators, psychologists and sociologists and all those that consider the technology an indispensable ally rather than a service provider.

Looking towards the future is a challenge also for creatives and especially for designers of virtual and physical environments dedicated to TEL and, more in general, for people involved in educational processes, dealing with design for the experience and with its significant qualities.

DULP@ICALT2010 is looking for authors that a) starting from the current state of the art, are able to imagine a realistic future of TEL that should be applicable in real contexts; b) will present development and use of technologies able to induce a fruitful encounter between disciplines, to the benefit of the centrality of the learning experiences and of the expectations of the individuals.

Open list of themes that may inspire the design for the future

- Future visions and models for ubiquitous learning in liquid learning places - New generation of virtual and physical learning place
- Balancing communities and personal identity
- Ecological detection of learning experience qualities
- From media literacy to design literacy
- ...

Workshop proceedings
--------------------
All papers will be blindly peer-reviewed by three (3) reviewers. According to the ICALT's Author Guidelines, the workshop paper should be 2 pages long (including authors' information, abstract - no more than 200 words -, all tables, figures, references, etc.) and should be written according to the IEEE Conference Publishing Services Formatting Guidelines.

The accepted contributions will be included in the proceeding of ICALT 2010 and published by IEEE Computer Society Publications.

7th International Workshop on Text-based Information Retrieval

TIR 2010

7th International Workshop on Text-based Information Retrieval

in conjunction with DEXA 2010
University of Deusto
Bilbao, Spain
30 August - 3 September 2010

Call for Papers

Intelligent algorithms for mining and retrieval are the key technology to cope with the information need challenges in our media-centered society. Methods for text-based information retrieval receive special attention, which results from the important role of written text, from the high availability of the Internet, and from the enormous importance of Web communities.

Advanced information retrieval and extraction uses methods from different areas: machine learning, computer linguistics and psychology, user interaction and modeling, information visualization, Web engineering, artificial intelligence, or distributed systems. The development of intelligent retrieval tools requires the understanding and combination of the achievements in these areas, and in this sense the workshop provides a common platform for presenting and discussing new solutions.

The following list organizes classic and ongoing topics from the field of text-based IR for which contributions are welcome:

  • Theory. Retrieval models, language models, similarity measures, formal analysis
  • Mining and Classification. Category formation, clustering, entity resolution, document classification
  • Web. Community mining, social network analysis, structured retrieval from XML documents
  • NLP. Text summarization, keyword extraction, topic identification
  • User Interface. Paradigms and algorithms for information visualization, personalization, privacy issues
  • User Context. Context models for IR, context analysis from user behaviour and from social networks
  • Multilinguality. Cross-language retrieval, multilingual retrieval, machine translation for IR
  • Evaluation. Corpus construction, experiment design, conception of user studies
  • Semantic Web. Meta data analysis and tagging, knowledge extraction, inference, and maintenance
  • Software Engineering. Frameworks and architectures for retrieval technology, distributed IR

The workshop is held for the seventh time. In the past, it was characterized by a stimulating atmosphere, and it attracted high quality contributions from all over the world. In particular, we encourage participants to present research prototypes and demonstration tools of their research ideas.

HAIS'10-CFP - Special Session on Computational Intelligence for Recommender Systems

Special session on "Computational Intelligence for Recommender Systems (CIRS'2010)

http://www.ehu.es/ccwintco/hais2010/specialsessions/SS02.html

Part of The 5th International Workshop on Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Systems (HAIS'10) 23rd -25th June, 2010, San Sebastián, Spain. http://www.ehu.es/ccwintco/hais2010

Recommender Systems (RS) are software applications that suggest useful and interesting items to users in their decision-making while interacting with large information spaces. They recommend items of interest to users based on preferences they have expressed, either explicitly or implicitly. The ever-expanding volume and increasing complexity of information on the Web has therefore made such systems essential tools for users in a variety of information seeking or various e-applications. RS help overcome the information overload problem by exposing users to the most interesting items, and by offering novelty, surprise, and relevance. Recommender technology is hence the central piece of the information seeking puzzle. Computational Intelligence (CI) paradigms reveal to be potential tools to face the Web uncertainty. In particular, CI techniques may be properly exploited to handle Web usage data and develop Web-based applications tailored on users' preferences. Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following:

1) Case studies of RS implementations
2) Context-aware and multidimensional RS
3) Evaluation of RS
4) Novel paradigms of RS
5) Recommendation algorithms
6) Recommendation in social networks
7) RS interfaces
8) Scalability issues
9) Security and privacy
10) Semantic web technologies for RS
11) Theoretical aspects of RS
12) User modeling and RS

Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management (PAKM 2010)

November 10-12, 2010 Philadelphia - USA
The Eighth Conference on
Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management
http://www.ischool.drexel.edu/PAKM2010/

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

Submission due 7 April 2010
Conference: 10 to 12 November 2010
Workshops: 10 November 2010
Scientific Program: 11-12 November 2010

AIMS AND SCOPE
==============
The PAKM Conference Series offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners and researchers. The conference focus is on developing and deploying advanced business solutions for the management of knowledge in organizations and other communities that can benefit from its methods.

This year's conference we will pay particular attention to the innovations on the interaction between Business, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Library and Information Science.

PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange novel ideas, to develop new insights, and to envision, propose and demonstrate new kinds of solutions and new organizational methods and/or tools to Knowledge Management problems.

Management in companies deals with many things: people, energy, materials, etc. The management integrates them as a whole system and organizes the flow between the parts efficiently. In some companies, the same is done with knowledge. What methods are available and how well this integration of knowledge is understood?

Libraries and universities are examples of organizations where knowledge plays a major role within management. What methods are available to integrate knowledge (e.g., curricula, expertise, centers of excellence, programs) with people and other resources in libraries and universities?

The topics will cover relevant and applicable aspects of knowledge management. We invite practitioners and researchers from all over the world to submit papers. We are looking forward to a conference which will address a wide spectrum of topics from a variety of perspectives.

We seek original contributions in the business and organization sciences, cognitive science, library and information science, information systems and computer science that represent a true advancement beyond the state-of-the-art of Knowledge Management.

Business and organization sciences provide the overall framework for developing a knowledge management approach with a focus on the business aspects rather than on information technology aspects.

Computer science provides the tools needed to build the information systems that are often required to make certain aspects of a knowledge management solution work. Cognitive science helps to design knowledge management solutions in line with the cognitive capabilities of the people involved and optimally embedded in their work context.

Library and information science analyzes how to organize and understand knowledge for the benefit of the users.

Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management: PAKM 2010

Three Post-Docs are offered by the Joint Research Centre

Three Post-Docs are offered by the Joint Research Centre / European Commission

Short description of activity:

The Container Traffic Monitoring (Contraffic) project is carried out in the framework of Community Customs Cooperation. The latest amendment to the basic legislation foresees the possibility that the Commission establish and manage a "directory of data" on the international goods supply chain including transport, based on both public and private data sources. The Commission is empowered to access and analyze such data for the purposes of operational and strategic analyses and also to make data and results available to competent MS authorities. Such data includes the movements of containers as well as their means of transport (e.g. maritime vessels).

CONTRAFFIC focuses precisely on the analysis of past movements of maritime containers. Data is gathered from different sources and analysed in a way that allows the extraction of useful patterns and information that improves detection of fraud involving false declarations of origin for traded goods.
