Computer Science Education Research Conference
(CSERC '11)
7 - 8 April 2011
Heerlen, the Netherlands
Over the years, it has become clear that there is a need for more fundamental knowledge about and input into computer science education. To contribute to this, an international scientific conference will be organised, creating a platform for researchers in the field of computer science education. The conference is organised in cooperation with ACM SIGCSE.
Contributions at the scientific conference will be solicited from all over the world. Submissions will be peer-reviewed. The proceedings will be published in the ACM Digital library.
Themes
Themes of the conference will be:
* designing a Computer Science curriculum
* didactics and teaching methods for Computer Science subjects
* development of professional competencies in Computer Science
* tools and instruments supporting Computer Science Education
* field studies in Computer Science Education
* cultural and regional differences in Computer Science Education
* convergence and divergence in Computer Science bachelor and master Education
* vocational and professional Computer Science Education
Collocation with NIOC2011
CSERC '11 will be organised collocated with the NIOC 2011 conference. Although CSERC is organised separately, people attending either one, may freely visit the other. The two conferences take place at the same time, at the same locations.
NIOC is a Dutch, easily accessible conference for computer science teachers, working at high schools, at universities, or in industry. Every two years NIOC is organised in a different city in the Netherlands. NIOC is attended by up to 300 participants.
Organisation
As the initiative to this conference is developed by the hosting institute, the Conference Chairs have been invited from the Open University of the Netherlands: prof. dr. Gerrit van der Veer, prof. dr. Peter Sloep and prof. dr. Marko van Eekelen.
The Organizing Committee will be chaired by Evert van de Vrie and Mieke Haemers. The organisers cooperate with ACM SIGCSE to develop an International Programme Committee.
The Computer Science Education Research Conference (CSERC '11) is an international forum for researchers with interests in all aspects of computer science education. It embraces a broad view of current and future trends in computer science education and aspires to be a lively environment for presenting the latest research results. CSERC '11 considers full papers for presentation at the conference. A formal refereeing process selects the best presentations for publication in the ACM Digital library.
Categories
CSERC solicits high-quality articles in any of three categories:
* Research Articles: leading-edge, previously unpublished research
* Position Papers: advocating or critiquing new trends
* Project Papers: lessons drawn from completed projects
Articles must be original and not submitted to any other forum for publication. They may consider any aspect of computer science education. Theory, trends, implementation, experience and projects, all lie within the scope of the conference. Articles on the following subject areas are particularly welcomed:
* designing a Computer Science curriculum
* didactics and teaching methods for Computer Science subjects
* development of professional competencies in Computer Science
* tools and instruments supporting Computer Science Education
* field studies in Computer Science Education
* cultural and regional differences in Computer Science Education
* convergence and divergence in Computer Science bachelor and master Education
* vocational and professional Computer Science Education
Preparing and Submitting Manuscripts
Full papers (up to 16 pages) can be submitted for presentation at the conference. Each submission must declare its category (research article, position paper, project paper).
Prepare your manuscript according to the instructions available at the ACM website.
Send your submission in pdf.
Papers can be submitted through Easychair. All submissions are screened by the programme committee.
Proceedings in the ACM digital Library
Proceedings available at the conference will contain all accepted papers. The conference proceedings will appear in the ACM Digital Library.
Deadlines
Paper submission deadline January 9, 2011
Notification of acceptance February 27, 2011
Camera-ready full paper deadline March 27, 2011

* No more than 16 pages
* Content is original, unpublished and not submitted elsewhere for publication
* Topic is clearly stated
* Category of submission is clearly indicated (research article, position paper, project paper)
* English, well-written, well-structured, and well-illustrated
* Has an abstract, an introduction, and a conclusion
* Contribution is explained in the context of related work
* Self-contained (i.e. understanding the article is not overly dependent on references to websites or other publications)
Research article criteria
* The general criteria for all papers
* Convincing motivation for the relevance of the problem in computer science education
* Analysis of the problem
* Clear outline of the approach taken to investigate or solve the problem
* Description of research results or the solution
* Conclusion: summarize the problem, the solution and results, and how the work solves the problem
* Overview of related work and the current state-of-the-art
Position paper criteria
* The general criteria for all papers
* A convincing academic motivation for what should become a new trend or critiquing recent trends
* Inclusion of academic arguments and convincing examples
