PhD Studentship
Learning Design
The University of Bolton - The Institute for Educational Cybernetics (IEC)
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to research factors influencing the uptake and effective use of IMS Learning Design, with a focus on proposing, implementing (in software) and evaluating different (socio-)technical approaches. The studentship covers all fees, and an annual stipend of £15,000. The research will investigate factors influencing the uptake and effective use of IMS Learning Design and focus on proposing, implementing (in software) and evaluating different (socio-)technical approaches. The factors to be considered will include institutional, organisational, pedagogic, cultural, competences, authoring and runtime software implementations and their usability. In the light of this analysis, one or more alternative approaches to be investigated will be identified, implemented and evaluated.
The IEC team has an outstanding record of contributing to the development and implementation of IMS Learning Design, and in investigating the questions raised by the specification. Research focuses on systems which facilitate pedagogical and organisational change, and exploration of the concept of the Personal Learning Environment (originally proposed by the IEC) through the disaggregation of learning activities and other services. Academic leadership is provided by Professor Bill Olivier, a Co-editor of the IMS LD specification, and Dr David (Dai) Griffiths, who has published extensively on IMS Learning Design. There is a strong development team including Phillip Beauvoir, Paul Sharples, Scott Wilson and Kris Popat, who have produced key IMS LD applications such as Reload, Recourse, the Astro Learning Design Player and the Wookie widget server (now in the Apache Incubator).
The successful candidate will be a European Union citizen who is eager to develop a deep understanding of the pedagogical issues raised by IMS Learning Design. They should have good communication skills to: work with authors and learners to understand their concerns and priorities and engage them in the development process. They must also have the technical expertise needed to:
• Develop graphical UIs
• Implement prototypes using Web technologies, such as HTML5, Javascript, Ajax and XML
• Be able to upgrade and extend existing Open Source software, in particular:
• Recourse authoring tool - Java using Eclipse
• Astro LD runtime front end - Java server-side tools
They will also be expected to collaborate with the team in publishing papers and reports, and organising and attending meetings and events.
A PhD candidate from East China Normal University, Shanghai, China, will be resident at IEC throughout 2010 - 11, and will be working on pedagogical and cultural aspects of IMS LD. It is anticipated that there will be opportunities to build on this collaboration in the research work carried out, with the potential for a return visit to China in 2011 - 12. An interest in building on these opportunities would be an advantage to the applicant.
The closing date for applications is 9.00 am, Friday 9th July 2010.
It is anticipated that interviews will be held on Tuesday 20th July.
To apply, please
• complete this application form
• write up to 1000 words describing your relevant experience and ideas regarding the research to be carried out
• and submit the above together with a covering letter by email to Dr. Dai Griffiths, d.e.griffiths@bolton.ac.uk
Dr. Griffiths will also respond to requests for further details, informal inquiries and questions or feedback on draft proposals.
