This was a keynote paper from the 2002 CAiSE. The keynote was given by Matthias Jarke. It gives a nice conceptual overview on what we did in the collaborative research center "Media and cultural communication". The message of the paper is in the title. Metadata management is essential for any kind of cooperative knowledge management since the use of digital media requires some kind of interchange data formats and common understanding on the meaning of data. It was planned that this paper should be the first one in my cumulative habilitation work. But, then I decided for an even more interdisciplinary paper on our work on the electronic transcription of the Babylonian Talmud.
