Fourth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
"Learning in the Synergy of Multiple Disciplines"

Deadline for Papers: April 20th, 2009

Currently, the face of learning is changing substantially. Formal learning is surrounded by informal learning opportunities, classroom learning is complemented by workplace learning, and even the frontiers between teaching and learning are disappearing as people are learning collaboratively and engaging in knowledge communities. These developments are driven by technological advancements: large scale knowledge repositories provide learners with content and support them in an individualized and adaptive way; semantic technologies provide contextualized and task-specific information; the Web 2.0 enables people to actively take part in knowledge communication and knowledge construction. These new tools and technical means need psychological and pedagogical models of learning which take into account the vast diversity of situations where learning takes place, as well as the specific needs of individuals, tutors and organisations.

ECTEL 2009 aims to bring together new technological developments and learning models. The conference will explore how the synergy of multiple disciplines, ranging from Computer Science, Education, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and Social Science, can provide new, more effective and more sustainable, technology-enhanced learning solutions. Description
Social networks research has come a long way since the notable "six-degree separation" experiment. In recent years, social network research has advanced significantly, thanks to the prevalence of the online social websites and the availability of a variety of offline large-scale social network systems such as collaboration networks. These social network systems are usually characterized by the complex network structures and rich accompanying contextual information. Researchers are increasingly interested in addressing a wide range of challenges residing in these disparate social network systems, including identifying common static topological properties and dynamic properties during the formation and evolution of these social networks, and how contextual information can help in analyzing the pertaining social networks. These issues have important implications on community discovery, anomaly detection, trend prediction! and can enhance applications in multiple domains such as information retrieval, recommendation systems, security and so on. The third SNA-KDD '2009 aims to bring together practitioners and researchers with a specific focus on the emerging trends and industry needs associated with the traditional Web, the social Web, and other forms of social networking systems. Both theoretical and experimental submissions are encouraged. The interesting topics include (1) data mining advances on the discovery and analysis of communities, on personalization for solitary activities (like search) and social activities (like discovery of potential friends), on the analysis of user behavior in open fora (like conventional sites, blogs and fora) and in commercial platforms (like e-auctions) and on the associated security and privacy-preservation challenges; (2) social network modeling, scalable, customizable social network infrastructure construction, dynamic growth and evolution patterns identification and discovery using machine learning approaches or multi-agent based simulation. .

Workshop Topics
The third SNA-KDD '2009 solicits contributions on social network analysis and graph mining, including the emerging applications of the Web as a social medium. Papers should elaborate on data mining methods, issues associated to data preparation and pattern interpretation, both for conventional data (usage logs, query logs, document collections) and for multimedia data (pictures and their annotations, multi-channel usage data). Topics of interest include but are not limited to: Communities discovery and analysis in large scale online and offline social networks Personalization for search and for social interaction Recommendations for product purchase, information acquisition and establishment of social relations Data protection inside communities Misbehavior detection in communities Web mining algorithms for clickstreams, documents and search streams Preparing data for web mining Pattern presentation for end-users and experts Evolution of patterns in the Web Evolution of communities in the Web Dynamics and evolution patterns of social networks, trend prediction Contextual social network analysis Temporal analysis on social networks topologies Search algorithms on social networks Multi-agent based social network modeling and analysis Application of social network analysis Anomaly detection in social network evolution

Paper Submission
The workshop proceedings are distributed to the SIGKDD'09 attendees who register for the workshop. Note that registration for the workshop is free to the conference attendees.

Business Process Management and Social Software (BPMS2)

BPMS2 2009

CALL FOR PAPERS

Second International Workshop on
Business Process Management and Social Software (BPMS2)

in conjunction with BPM 2009
September 7th, 2009, Ulm, Germany

Papers submission deadline: May 7th, 2009
http://crinfo.univ-paris1.fr/users/nurcan/BPMS2_2009/

Organizers:
Selmin Nurcan – University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, France
Rainer Schmidt – Aalen University , Germany

SCOPE:

Social software is a new paradigm that is spreading quickly in society, organizations and economics. It supports social interaction and social production. Social interaction is the interaction of non-predetermined individuals. Social production is the creation of artefacts, by combining the input from independent contributors without predetermining the way to do this. Users are supported in creating new contacts, presenting themselves and collaborating with other users. As a result, content, knowledge and software is not created by a hierarchy of experts, but by combining a multitude of contributions of independent authors/actors. Examples for such a social production are wikis, blogs, social bookmarking and tagging, etc.

Social software follows a more egalitarian and meritocratic approach compared to traditional approaches where the role of the software user is determined by the enterprise senior management and its representatives. Thus, trust and reputation play a crucial role in the use of social software instead of authority granted by the top management.

The paradigm of social software and social production has created a multitude of success stories such as wikipedia.org and the development of the Linux operating system. Therefore, more and more enterprises see social software and social production as a means for further improvement of their business processes and business models. For example, they integrate their customers into product development by using blogs to capture ideas for new products and features. Thus, business processes have to be adapted to new communication patterns between customers and the enterprise: for example, the communication with the customer is increasingly a bi-directional communication with the customer and among the customers. Social software also offers new possibilities to enhance business processes by improving the exchange of knowledge and information, to speed up decisions, etc.

Up to now, the interaction of social software and the underlying paradigm of social production with business processes have not been investigated in depth. Therefore, the objective of the workshop is to explore how social software and social production interact with business process management, how business process management has to change to comply with social production, and how business processes may profit from social techniques.

TOPICS OF INTEREST:

1. New opportunities provided by social software for BPM
- How can business processes fit to business models based on the paradigm of social production?
- Which new possibilities for the design of business processes are created by social software?
- How are trust and reputation established in business processes using social software?
- Are there business processes which require sociality, especially when they are not well defined
(as production workflows) but collaborative or ad hoc?
- How does social production influence the design of business processes?
- What is the impact on conceptual models for those categories of business processes which are not well-defined
or that we do not wish to freeze using classical business process enactment systems for instance?

2. Engineering next generation of business processes: BPM 2.0 ?
- Do we need new BPM methods and/or paradigms to cope with social software?
- Is there an influence of social production and social software on BPM methods themselves?
- Are there any similarities or relationships with process mining techniques and also with workflow control and role patterns?
- Which phases of the BPM lifecycle (Design, Deployment, Performance, and Evaluation) are affected the most by social software?
- How can BPM profit from using social software?
- Which types of social software can be used in which phases of the BPM lifecycle?

3. Business process implementation support by social software
- Which kinds of social software can be used to implement business processes?
- Which categories of business processes can profit from social software?
- How does social software interact with WFMS or other business process support systems?
- How can we use Wikis, Blogs etc. to support business processes?
- What new kinds of business knowledge representation are offered by social production?

2nd Workshop Digital Social Networks

Call for Papers – Deadline April 26th, 2009

2nd Workshop Digital Social Networks

One Day Workshop at the annual meeting of the
German Society for Computer Science (GI)
Sept. 28th – Oct. 2nd, 2009, Lübeck

Date of the Workshop: to be announced

Coordinator: Clemens Cap (University of Rostock)

Due to the good acceptance of the 1st Workshop Digital Social Networks (annual meeting of the GI in 2008) there was the idea to continue this event. This is the call for papers of the 2nd Workshop. Besides this event there is a workshop planned on Schloss Dagstuhl in January 2011.

Social relations and the resulting social networks are an important basis for social and technological development. With the technologies and concepts of Web 2.0, new digital forms of support become available for a participatory development of social networks. Social Software as new form of cooperation systems enables new modes of collaboration inside and outside of an enterprise. The economic success of portals such as XING / OpenBC, LinkedIn, Friendster, Orkut, StudiVZ or Facebook illustrates the demand for such solutions as well as the difficulty of a proper economic evaluation. From the point of view of the user, questions of privacy, data protection and identity theft are getting more important. Users of several systems want interoperability and data exchange. Besides purely technological questions also topics of media presence in open and semi open forums and sociological phenomena are becoming relevant. With ubiquitous access to human communication acts on these platforms new possibilities for analyzing social networks become possible – up to the prognosis of social trends.

The workshop on digital social networks will analyze these issues from theoretical and practical points of view. Contributions are solicited on these topics:

• Methods for analyzing digital social networks and social interaction
• Social networking services and social software
• Trust, reputation, authentic contents and social control in digital networks
• Applications, services and APIs on social portals
• Search engines for people, trend analysis and prognosis on social portals
• Special graph properties in social networks
• Technical modeling of social structures
• Business cases and economic evaluation of digital social networks
• Legal and social aspects of online communities
• Social networks and games
• Technical questions in digital social networks
• Security, privacy, identity protection and media usage in social portals
• Interoperability, data exchange and data synchronization in social portals
• Personalization and adaptation to user preference
• Case studies, if they exhibit unique features

1 January 24th - 29th, 2010, Dagstuhl Seminar 10041, for more information please contact Prof. Cap

The contributions shall be up to 15 pages in length and present in German or
English language original, unpublished research results. The papers will be published in a
proceedings volume Lecture Notes in Informatics (LNI) of the annual meeting of the GI.
Reports on practical experiences are welcome if they exhibit new or special features, also
interdisciplinary contributions are solicited. The goal is a good mixture of theoretical and
practical research, each of which will be presented in a half-day session. All contributions are
refereed anonymously by at least three members of the program committee. As in 2008 we
assume an acceptance rate of 40% - 60%. More information about submission, formatting
style and templates can be found on the website http://www.informatik2009.de
Acceptance Criteria: The criteria for acceptance are especially originality, novelty,
innovation, selection and presentation of the ideas. The program committee also intends to
select one or two keynotes by renowned specialists.

As in last year we will again have a Future Network Best Paper Award sponsored by http://www.future-network.at/

The Workshop addresses researcher and practitioners in the young field of digital social networks. In addition to pure computer scientists, also computer scientists with an interest in interdisciplinary research are invited. Especially the areas of sociology, media sciences and organizational psychology promise interesting and stimulating discussions.

Social Knowledge:
Using Social Media to Know What You Know
A book edited by John P. Girard, Minot State University, USA JoAnn L. Girard, Sagology, USA

Introduction
For the past two decades, executives have struggled to develop effective ways of sharing what their organizations know. Organizational leaders are now seeking ways to share knowledge with both internal and external stakeholders driven by concerns such as downsizing, the impending retirement of baby boomers, terrorism, and a host of other organizational challenges. Despite the best efforts of many innovative leaders, few organizations have achieved the desired level of knowledge sharing. This is certainly not due to a lack of energy, enthusiasm, or excitement on the part of managers, but rather the result of immature, complicated, and expensive tools, techniques, and technologies. Equally, a culture based on a need-to-know rather than one based on a need-to-share prevented the transparency necessary to achieve organizational knowledge goals.

Today we are seeing some very promising results from third-generation knowledge projects, which focus on connecting people and facilitating collaboration. Many organizations are now reaping the benefits of using social media such as wikis for collaboration and social networking tools for connecting people. These emerging tools and techniques provide flexible, agile, and intuitive solutions for connecting people with people and facilitating coordination, communication, and collaboration.

Almost certainly, there will be some debate about the exact meaning of this term Social Knowledge – the following definition is provided to begin the debate:

Social Knowledge is the use of social media to create, transfer, and preserve organizational knowledge – past, present, and future – with a view to achieving the organizational vision.

The Overall Objective of the Book
In the fields of management, information studies, information systems, psychology etc., there exists a need for an edited collection of articles in the area of social knowledge. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks, latest empirical research findings, and practitioners’ best practices in the area. The book will be multidisciplinary in nature and will consider a wide range of topics, each of which is related to social knowledge. It is written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of social knowledge in business, government, or non-profit sectors.

The Target Audience
Professionals and researchers working in the field of knowledge management in various disciplines, e.g. library, information and communication sciences, administrative sciences and management, education, adult education, sociology, computer science, information technology. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support executives concerned with the management of expertise, knowledge, information and organizational development in different types of work communities and environments.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Social knowledge models
Defining social knowledge
Cross-generational social knowledge techniques
Measuring social knowledge success
Technology to support social knowledge
Organizational cultural considerations
Future Technologies
Generational differences
Future value of social knowledge
Barriers to social knowledge
Multinational, multilingual considerations
Best practices in social knowledge
Social knowledge preservation techniques
Historical perspectives of social knowledge
Real-world case studies

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 31, 2009, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by June 15, 2009 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 31, 2009. All submitted chapters will undergo a double-blind peer review after which authors will receive feedback on their submissions by October 15, 2009. Final chapters are expected by December 31, 2009. The book is scheduled to be published in 2011 by IGI Global, www.igi-global.com, publisher of the IGI Publishing (formerly Idea Group Publishing), Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing and Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference) imprints.

Grace Hopper - Pioneer of Computer Science

This is for the Ada Lovelace day. A woman in computer science I admire is Grace Hopper. Here is a short paragraph from wikipedia.org describing her contributions to computer science.

Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist and United States Naval officer. A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I calculator, and she developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. Because of the breadth of her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace".
I have chosen Grace Hopper because she is still inspiring young women to computer science today. There is still the Grace Hopper Conference (in 2009 it took place in Tucson, AZ) and there are the Grace Hopper Scholarships. With FLOW-MATIC she developed the first programming language which used common language terms to describe data and functions. This became later the basis for the heavily used programming language COBOL.

Challenges in Geospatial Data Harmonisation

CALL FOR PAPERS

Challenges in Geospatial Data Harmonisation
Pre-Conference Workshop at AGILE 2009

June 02, 2009
Hanover, Germany
http://www.esdi-humboldt.eu/events/agile2009.html

European Spatial Data Infrastructures (ESDI) integrate the diversity of geospatial data available for a multitude of European organisations. The implementation of SDI in the context of initiatives like INSPIRE, GMES and SEIS, requires that the organisations document, publish and harmonise their geospatial data and support users in accessing this information in a suitable way.

Data harmonisation is about creating the possibility to combine data from heterogeneous sources into integrated, consistent and unambiguous information products, in a way that is of no concern to the end-user.
This poses many different research challenges for facilitating the harmonisation of geospatial data and metadata by automating the necessary steps as far as possible.

This workshop will bring together researchers from different communities to investigate current strategies and discuss future research collaborations in the wider context of data harmonisation. Further, the idea of the workshop is to learn about ongoing activities in research projects that provide successful test cases for enabling geospatial data harmonisation.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

* Research in harmonisation processing for e.g. resolution,
generalisation, edge matching, multiple representation, schema
translation
* Conceptual Schema Translation
o Specification of the mapping process
o Formal language for the specification
* Quality
o Specification of quality evaluation processes for harmonisation
o Metrics for quality evaluation of mapping processes
o Investigating the impact of processing on the quality of data
* How to enable semantic interoperability?
o Approaches with formal semantics, collaborative approaches,
approaches from machine learning, ...
o How to measure and express thematic accuracy?
* Handling gridded data (multidimensional grids) or dynamic data
(e.g. mathematical models for forecasts)
o Harmonisation issues
o Harmonisation processes
* Automatic set up of data harmonisation process
o Identification of existing heterogeneities such as semantic,
geometric, resolution or others
o Methods to automatically assign a specific harmonisation
process to a detected heterogeneity
o How to handle specification and execution of workflows for
web services to construct complex transformation services?

ICWL 2009 Workshop Virtual Worlds for academic, organizational, and life-long learning

1st CALL FOR PAPERS

First Workshop on
Virtual Worlds for academic, organizational, and life-long learning
(ViWo Workshop 2009)

Aachen, Germany, August 19-21, 2009
http://www.iicm.tugraz.at/ViWo/ViWo2009Workshop

In conjunction with
8th International Conference on Web-Based Learning (ICWL 2009)

This CfP is also available as PDF: http://www.iicm.tugraz.at/ViWo2009Workshop/ViWo2009-CfP.pdf

This workshop will take place during the ICWL 2009 in Aachen, Germany (August 19-21) as a special program item. The Workshop ViWo 2009 provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of learning and training in virtual worlds. The 8th International Conference on International Conference on Web-based Learning, ICWL 2009, will be jointly organized by Hong Kong Web Society, RWTH Aachen University, and Max-Planck-Institute for Computer Science. ICWL is an annual international conference on web-based learning.

Background

Our society of the 21st century makes great demands on its members caused by rapid developing and ever-changing political, social, economical and technological situations. Consequently, it is expected that members of the society keep pace with these mutable situations, adapt their skills and expertise. As a result, modern instructional design, learning goals and processes as well as appropriate learning environments must support the development of the aforementioned skills and expertises. Consequently, educational approaches have changed dramatically over time from less formal schooling in the agrarian society to remedial repetitive learning in the industrialization age to learning with an understanding in today’s knowledge society. Based on that, different modern educational strategies have been developed which includes aspects such as self-directed learning, collaborative learning, experiential-based learning and actively participating. Educational approaches have also been influenced by technology but have also increasingly applied technology over the last decades, such as motion pictures, radio, television, computers and other emerging information and communication technologies (ICT).

Last year’s hype surrounding the virtual world “Second Life” has also generated significant interest in the education community. Although virtual worlds have been an active research topic for a long time, technology was not ready for complex application scenarios since recent years. New interesting and powerful platforms and tools, such as Second Life, Active Worlds, Multiverse, Open Croquet, OpenSim and Sun’s 3D Wonderland, have been emerged applicable to complement or even replace other knowledge transfer and learning settings. Modern virtual worlds are seen from an optimistic viewpoint as a disruptive and transformative technology. However, it still remains unclear to some extent where the real benefits and limitations of using virtual worlds as knowledge transfer and learning environments are when compared to more traditional methods. In order to avoid the same pitfalls of past e-learning solutions by just applying traditional learning approaches to a new technology, this special track is indented to offer a multidisciplinary platform which brings together international researchers from different organizations in order to share their experience with this technology.

Topics

We invite submissions of papers in the categories research, development, evaluation and best practices that deal with virtual worlds for academic, organizational, and life-long learning issues including, but not limited to:

Mash-Up Personal Learning Environments

Another colleague of mine, I really love to work with in ROLE again, is Fridolin Wild. Here is Fridolin presentation about mashing-up personal learning environments at the TenCompetence Winter School in Innsbruck, Austria, 2009. Together with Felix Mödritscher, he is leading WP 7 about learning communities. Questions here are how can communities localize personal learning environments (PLE) in their practices. Like any other modern medium PLE are over-adressing. The adress space of a PLE equals the number of all learners. Only in the practices of a learning community a PLE can be useful. So, WP 6 is studying activities of learners in communities and how to find localization strategies for PLE.

Join the ROLE Community Outreach Program now! Visit us at LinkedIn Group ROLE and become a member of our community (http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/1590487).

ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments) implements an extensive community outreach programme to involve as many researcher, developer and user communities as possible world-wide. ROLE strives to stimulate these communities to open up closed learning environments by providing respective learning services, we understand the programme as a cornerstone of the project. It is therefore deeply anchored in the proposed R & D process.

We use Web 2.0 means like the LinkedIn group to facilitate the communication and collaboration among the diverse communities.

In ROLE we target decentralized ways of learning, more suited to a Web 2.0 point of view, in which each learner can select her own learning tools, choose her own learning tasks and explore different learning practices. ROLE facilitates large communities which will be studied from a joint personal learning and Web 2.0 point of view.

The overwhelming complexity of solutions to every imaginable combination requires us to ask the ROLE communities for help and support in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating upcoming ROLE solutions.

Please forward this message to people who may be interested in Personal Learning Environments.

The Role project is supported by the European Commission, in the theme ICT-2007 digital dibraries and technology-enhanced learning, as alarge-scale integrating project (IP), under the 7th framework programme, grant agreement no.: 231396.

Here is Ambjörns keynote talk he gave at the 1st World SUmmit on the Knowledge Society in Athens, Greece, September 24, 2008. Remember, the Greece riots started only a couple of weeks later in early December.

Deadline Extension for Special Issue Interactive Learning Environments "Towards eLearning 2.0 University"

DEADLINE EXTENSION: New Deadline 23.03.2009

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue Interactive Learning Environments
"Towards eLearning 2.0 University"

RATIONALE

Although Web 2.0 approaches have not been designed specifically for educational purposes, their integration into educational practice is perceived as beneficial for the next generation of eLearning contexts. The main argument in support of this claim is that eLearning 2.0, as this integration is called, will help to conceptualize eLearning from the learner’s perspective rather than from the institutional perspective, placing the learner in the centre of a more social, personal and flexible learning process.

eLearning 2.0, therefore, marks a shift away from the previous generation of eLearning, in which learners were consumers, towards a new generation in which learners are producers, in charge of their own learning process. This requires not only a technological shift, deploying Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs, RSS, etc., but also, and more importantly, a conceptual change in which social learning, relying on social software, is key.

This special issue is dedicated to the question of how traditional and distance universities deal and should deal with eLearning 2.0 approaches. This includes a wide spectrum of topics: from current practices to theoretical foundations.

TOPICS

Areas for inclusion in this special issue comprise those related to eLearning 2.0 in general and, particularly, in the context of traditional and distance universities. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

* Theoretical foundations of eLearning 2.0
* Pedagogical and didactical implications of eLearning 2.0
* Instructional design implications
* Empirical evaluations
* Assessment
