The Seed Salon: Is society turning inward? Albert-László Barabási + James Fowler
The following is from Seed Magazine. Fascinating stuff. Barabási is giving the keynote on COMPLEX'09, Shanghai, China, February 23-25. We will present our paper "You never walk alone: Recommending Academic Events Based on Social Network Analysis" at the same conference. Before watching the video you have to watch the "sponsored message" :-(
Albert-László Barabási + James Fowler
Barabási mathematically describes networks in the World Wide Web, the internet, the human body, and society at large. Fowler seeks to identify the social and biological links that define us as humans. In this video Salon, Barabási and Fowler discuss contagion and the Obama campaign, debate the natural selection of robustness, and ask: Is society turning inward?

*** Aim and Scope ***
The education/learning activity is typical activity for our human to acquire knowledge directly, exchange it interactively, represent it conceptually and refine it for more useful content. The computer-supported education/learning functions or systems have been investigated to encourage such knowledge handling activities successfully or construct such knowledge management environments intelligently. Some systems focus on the content composition; some do on operational and communicative functions between learners and system managers or among learners. It is important to support our knowledge cycle smartly, which consists of acquisition, refinement, reproduction and presentation, but it is not always easy to design and implement such functionality or environment. Of course, we must investigate what form can the knowledge be represented in computer-supported functionality/environment so as to keep the understandable intention between learners and computers. Also, it may be necessary to study the functionality/environment with respect to the transition between tacit and explicit knowledge and the knowledge situation is defined with 4 kinds of transitions, proposed by I.Nonaka. Our session aims to discuss current and interesting resources concerning to the learning support issues in knowledge society.

Swiss Experiment - From Wireless Sensor Networks to E-Science
On Monday, January 26, 2009, Prof. Karl Aberer from EPFL, Switzerland will give a Distinguished UMIC Lecture in the Super-C Ford Lecture Hall at RWTH Aachen University with the title "Swiss Experiment - >From Wireless Sensor Networks to E-Science"
Abstract:
The emergence of novel sensing devices and wireless sensor network technologies provides a whole new opportunity for global environmental studies and environment-related decision making. The Swiss Experiment is a newly initiated multidisciplinary project aimed at building a large scale platform, to support field investigations of environmental processes, which is based on new sensor and data management technology. In this talk we will first give an overview of the environmental problems being addressed in the Swiss Experiment and identify opportunities of supporting environmental scientists by recent advances in communications and information systems. We will discuss in particular our approach to support data and information management throughout experimental campaigns. This includes support for distributed data stream management based on Global Sensor Networks, for data warehousing and analysis, for map-based visualizations based on SensorMap and for information sharing using a WIKI-based and semantics- enabled platform. We will demonstrate our initial results and identify some future challenges towards developing a truly comprehensive information management support for environmental sciences.
Biographical sketch:
Karl Aberer is a Professor for Distributed Information Systems at EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland, and director of the Swiss National Centre for Mobile Information and Communication Systems (NCCR-MICS). His research interests are on decentralization and self-organization in information systems with applications in peer-to-peer search, overlay networks, trust management and mobile and sensor networks. Before joining EPFL in 2000 he was leading the research division of open adaptive information systems at the Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute (IPSI) of GMD in Germany, which he joined in 1992. There his work concentrated on XML data management and cross-organizational workflows. He studied mathematics at ETH Zürich where he also completed his Ph.D. in theoretical computer science in 1991. From 1991 to 1992 he was postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley. He is member of several journal editorial boards, including VLDB Journal, and conference steering committees. Recently he served as PC co-chair of ICDE 2005, MDM 2006 and ISWC 2007.

Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVE), Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs), and other 3-D virtual environments have begun to attract the attention of scholars, practitioners, and the public at large. Although many of these environments originated as games or social networks, numerous scholars have recognized that virtual worlds and 3-D web have the
potential to revolutionize how individuals work, play, and use the web, how groups and teams interact, collaborate, socialize, and conduct their work, how businesses market and sell products, goods, and services, and how societal and governmental boundaries and institutions are stretched
and redefined. The popularity of games such as World of Warcraft, social networks such as Second Life, and children’s games such as Webkinz has demonstrated that these environments have appeal, and experience thus far has shown that these environments present both opportunities and challenges for individuals, businesses, governments, and societies.
This special issue has the goal of fostering research to examine this important phenomenon by offering scholars the opportunity to publish and disseminate empirical, theoretical, or conceptual papers addressing the importance and impact of virtual worlds and 3-D web. We are open to the
use of a variety of research methodologies to understand phenomena relating to Virtual Worlds and the 3-D web.
Topics relevant to this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Studies and models of individual perceptions¸ acceptance, and use of virtual worlds and the 3-D web
* Studies and models of group, team, and social interaction in virtual environments
* Studies and models of organizational applications for virtual worlds and the 3-D web
* Studies and models of inter-organizational uses of virtual worlds
* The application of business models, strategic frameworks, and/or competitive models to understand economic and business development in virtual worlds
* Studies and models examining the adoption, development, and evolution of virtual worlds and the 3-D web
* Examinations of the educational, business, legal, economic, societal, and jurisdictional impact of virtual worlds

Towards eLearning 2.0 University (Update)
Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactive Learning Environments
Towards eLearning 2.0 University
Towards eLearning 2.0 University
RATIONALE
Although Web 2.0 approaches have not been designed specifically for educational purposes, their integration into educational practice is perceived as beneficial for the next generation of eLearning contexts. The main argument in support of this claim is that eLearning 2.0, as this integration is called, will help to conceptualize eLearning from the learner’s perspective rather than from the institutional perspective, placing the learner in the centre of a more social, personal and flexible learning process.
eLearning 2.0, therefore, marks a shift away from the previous generation of eLearning, in which learners were consumers, towards a new generation in which learners are producers, in charge of their own learning process. This requires not only a technological shift, deploying Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs, RSS, etc., but also, and more importantly, a conceptual change in which social learning, relying on social software, is key.
This special issue is dedicated to the question of how traditional and distance universities deal and should deal with eLearning 2.0 approaches. This includes a wide spectrum of topics: from current practices to theoretical foundations.
TOPICS
Areas for inclusion in this special issue comprise those related to eLearning 2.0 in general and, particularly, in the context of traditional and distance universities. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

Our society of the 21st century makes great demands on its members in virtually every part of their lives. It is expected that members of the society keep pace with mutable situations, adapt their skills and expertise, and collaborate and compete to provide to some extent value for the society. As a result, modern instructional design, learning goals and processes as well as appropriate learning environments must support the development of the aforementioned skills and expertises.
Consequently, educational approaches have changed dramatically over time from remedial repetitive learning to today's learning with an understanding to become more independent in the learning process, strengthen metacognitive and teamwork skills as well as link knowledge in cultural context to be prepared for lifelong learning. Educational approaches have also been influenced by technology but have also increasingly applied technology over the last decades.
This complexity of modern learning setups of the 21st century demand appropriate models and reference architectures which support (a) to communicate the conception of topical learning from different viewpoints, (b) to identify the multidisciplinary relations of research areas, (c) to assess and classify learning approaches and implementations, (d) to provide domain knowledge for research and development activities. But such modern learning settings also require flexible approaches and technological solutions. E-Learning Ecosystems can provide both: it provides the foundation for interesting models and frameworks but it also focuses on modern technology as the infrastructure for enhanced e-learning environments.
Based on the ecosystem conception and the digital business ecosystem idea, this track welcomes original and quality contributions in areas including but not limited to
- Models and framework for topical learning
- Flexible and distributed learning environments
- Learning and training in virtual organizations
- Knowledge management in educational organizations
- New adaptive e-learning approaches
- Personalized learning environments
- Semantic web based learning environments
- Web 2.0 based learning environments
- Collaborative and group learning
- Trust building in distributed learning environments

Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis
(((This is from my colleague Benno Stein. Hope to see you in Graz again, Benno.)))
The vast number of electronic texts available in Internet media (e.g., newspaper articles, blogs, online forum messages, email messages) necessitates automated processing of information. However, it also increases opportunities for infringement of intellectual property rights. One important question is whether a text by a specific author includes another author's ideas, language, or writing without proper acknowledgment of the original source. Plagiarism analysis is a general term for a variety of automated methods for identifying plagiarism and related infringements. In connection with text documents, we distinguish between corpus-based and intrinsic analysis: the former compares suspicious documents against a set of potential original documents, the latter identifies potentially plagiarized passages by analyzing the suspicious document with respect to changes in writing style. Such passages can then be used as a starting point for a Web search or for human inspection. In addition, writing style can also be exploited by authorship analysis tools to extract meta-data for a textual document. Thus, by analyzing the stylistic choices of an author, it is possible to estimate the author's sex, age, educational level etc. Moreover, given that we have examples of the writing style of a set of candidate authors, we can identify the most likely author of a new text or verify whether this text is written by a specific author. Apart from the traditional usage of this technology in the analysis of literary works, such information is crucial for forensic applications where part of the evidence is electronic text.
This special issue solicits state-of-the-art methods, tools, and applications in the area of Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis. The following list gives examples from the outlined field for which contributions are welcome (but not limited to):
- Plagiarism detection in general, in Web communities and social networks
- Cross-language plagiarism
- Identifying near-duplicate and versioned documents
- Technology for high-similarity retrieval such as fingerprinting and
similarity hashing
- Models for authorship identification and verification
- Writing style analysis and author profiling
- NLP- and knowledge-based retrieval models to capture personal traits
and sentiment
- Web forensics, community fraud, and new Web infringements
- Test corpora, performance measures, and evaluation methods

CALL FOR PAPERS Language Resources and Evaluation Journal Special Issue on Plagiarism and Authorship Analysis Guest Editors: Efstathios Stamatatos, Benno Stein, and Moshe Koppel

The MEDES 2009 (The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems) will be held in Lyon, France from 27th Octobor to 30th Octobor, 2009. MEDES 2009 aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end.
Proposals for workshops are invited for consideration in MEDES 2009.
The purpose of these workshops is to provide a platform for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than the conferences themselves. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for young researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community. The format of each workshop is to be determined by the organizers, but it is expected that they contain ample time for general discussion. The preference is for one-day workshops, but other schedules will also be considered.
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit workshop proposals to the MEDES 2008 Workshop co-chair, Yinghua Ma (ma-yinghua@sjtu.edu.cn), NO LATER THAN April First, 2009. Submission can be made in Postscript, PDF, or ASCII with "CSTST08 Workshop Submission" in the subject header.
Proposals must be about 2--5 pages long and include:
* Name of workshop;
* Summary;
* Topics;
* Organizers (attach short CVs, limit of 2 pages each);
* The expected number of attendees and the planned length of the workshop.
* The names of potential participants, such as program committee members.
* Expected submission and acceptance rate (workshops only);
* Type (academic and/or industrial) and number of expected participants;
* Significance in relation to topics of the main conference and details
of previous workshops.
Workshop proposals are reviewed based on the quality of the proposal, its relation to the main conference topics, and the likelihood to attract enough participants. Notification of acceptance will be made by May First, 2009.
