The original incarnation of the World Wide Web was as a hypertext markup language/display, where information was made accessible through displaying links and data input by completing
forms. That architecture severely limited the quality of application that could be delivered over the Internet. Since then, Web-based applications have grown significantly more complex. Modern Web solutions are coming to resemble desktop applications, supporting elements such as sophisticated user interactions, client-side processing, asynchronous communications, and multimedia handling. Such Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) combine the best of desktop and Internet applications, joining server-based data and business logic with lightweight distribution,
local computation and powerful user interfaces. A variety of software technologies, such as AJAX, Flash, FLEX, OpenLaszlo and WPF, have been the foundation of the growth of RIAs. While RIA technologies have enabled many successful applications, programming technology alone does not result in sustainable systems. RIA development has brought novel challenges to system design,
implementation, testing and maintenance, exacerbated by the greater complexity of Internet architectures and the proliferating variety of design and programming platforms. Most current efforts at ameliorating this situation have been to creating software frameworks for the implementation of RIAs. However, to cope with the entire lifecycle of these complex and
interdisciplinary new applications, we need innovation in principled approaches, such as methodologies and tools.
This special issue considers the state-of-the-art, open problems, and future directions in the
Systematic Development of Rich Internet Applications. Original contributions (previously unpublished and not currently under review) are solicited in areas including, but not limited to:
• Model Driven Engineering applied to RIAs
• Methodological approaches for process, data, presentation and communication design in RIAs
• Tool support for the lifecycle of RIAs
• Accessibility and usability issues in RIA
• Re-Engineering Web Applications into RIA
• Future trends in RIA.
